How to write an effective conclusion for a project?

How to write an effective conclusion for a project?

It is said that the introduction is the first impression of your project and the conclusion is your last. They exist just like 2 buns that hold together the juicy kebab in a burger.

An introduction serves as a whirlpool that presents the initial problem in an appealing manner and sucks the reader into the sea of knowledge which is the main body of the research or project.

Similarly, the conclusion too must serve as an effective closing to your project so that it leaves a sweet aftertaste in the mouth of all that read and evaluate it.

It must have a certain touch to it that makes the reader feel like you have successfully answered all the problems that were present in your thesis at the beginning. It must also show not only how the problem was solved and evaluated but also how you advanced in the field and learned from it.

It would be a waste to let it become too wooden or dry. So let us start with a set of concise points to help us progress further in.

Main Ideas to be discussed:

  • Summarize the main idea of your project and research in a concise manner. This can be done by elaborating on your thesis or research questions.
  • Present your main findings from the practical work and data analysis.
  • What did you learn from the findings? ( remember it is important to show that you have evolved further in the area of study you focused on)
  • What is the meaning behind your results?

What are your suggestions for furthering this research?

Main Ideas:

You must make use of your space to restate the topic in a manner that makes its importance apparent. Meanwhile, you must also give a narrowed down insight into your thesis and main points. A good way would be to reread your main body and draw down one point from each of the central paragraphs.

But this is not enough. You must go on to conclude what significance they hold. A call for action, informing why further research is needed and why your topic is related and important to modern society is necessary. Otherwise, it will not hold much ground.

An example of a call for action would be as follows. In a research paper based on history, you must use the fact that history repeats itself to emphasize that, if necessary action is not taken, the current society will also fall prey to the discussed phenomenon.

Findings:

Here, in the conclusion, you must show proof that you had aimed to synthesize or gather new information. You should start by tying all your points together in the form of something concrete. In other words, show the results of the report in quantitative data or qualitative statements.

You must show that your research and project was a complete idea rather than a collection of random and vague ideas that were banded together.

It is important to link your research with older ones if possible both in favor and against. In fact, it is better that you do find some former researches against your own thesis because this will serve to prove how critical this topic is.

Learning:

Now is the time to tie things up by showing what you learned from the quantitative or qualitative data you gathered during the data analysis. Data analysis on its own would be useless if you did not go on to draw conclusions from it.

Summarize the results you drew from the data and explain how they relate together and untie the knots and secrets in your thesis or research.

Remember to not go too much into detail on anything. Just skim over the main portion of the results you have drawn to show your progress.

Logically backing your results:

You must always end the conclusion with logic. Try to provide a logical meaning to your results by backing it up with supporting facts that are already widely accepted. As logic is the most convincing and undeniable of all factors that make the readers heed you.

Do not be afraid to state that your research does not have a clear cut answer if that is the case. In such a case show that an answer may be within reach if more research is put in to end on an optimistic note.

Suggestion:

It is important to suggest the way forward to the reader after making a call of action.

For example in research about third world poverty rates, one could suggest focusing on increasing literacy, which would indirectly reduce poverty by making the people employable.

It is also important to pose a question at the end of the paper or project if it is found to be suitable. The question should be directed at the heart of the paper and should be answerable using the results you have drawn.

Avoid common Pitfalls and stiff sayings:

It is advisable not to use “In conclusion”, “In summary”, “In closing” and similar saying that sound stiff and unnaturally. Replace them with something that sounds natural and in flow with your conclusion like “To review”, “We can see” and “It is clear that”. With these, a good conclusion will stand on its own without being labeled in any way.

DOs:

  • Remind readers of the main idea.
  • Briefly summarize the key points of your study.
  • Propose a course of action and recommendations to take your idea further.
  • Try to address topics with wider significance and multiple implications.
  • Be decisive and unapologetic.
  • Be sure to show that u have learned something from the arrangement.

DON’Ts:

  1. Never simply paraphrase your thesis or main body.
  2. Do not give an extensive and repetitive summary of the topic
  3. Do not try to introduce whole new ideas in the conclusion. It is best to stick to supporting the ideas that you previously established.
  4. Don’t get carried away by a single topic and forget the remaining and poorly distribute your conclusion among them.
  5. Never sound unsure as it defeats the purpose of performing that project or thesis.

After going through the above discussion, I am sure that you can write a beautiful conclusion simply by sticking to the main points, stating your data, learning and logic and providing necessary suggestions while refraining from entertaining new information in it.
