10 He’s the Reason There Are Hippos in Colombia

It is commonly known that Pablo Escobar imported and exported cocaine from Colombia. But he imported more than just that. Additionally, he brought in a herd of hippos for his personal zoo! The hippos weren't killed or exported once the drug boss was brought down. Instead, they were permitted to roam freely, and as a result, they currently live in areas around the Amazon River. Since the climate in South America is similar to the one they were originally accustomed to in Africa, the animals have adapted extraordinarily well to it. On Pablo's previous property, which has been turned into an amusement park, some hippos are confined, but others are allowed to roam freely. The question of whether the hippos ought to be exterminated in order to preserve Pablo's legacy or whether they ought to be preserved because they are a vital part of Colombian history is still being discussed today.

In recent years, Medellin has grown in popularity among tourists. In fact, it has been ranked as one of the best places to travel in South America! But it wasn't always like that. And a great part of its fame can be attributed to Pablo Escobar. No, we're not referring to how he popularized it. We're discussing how the city underwent a significant renaissance to erase the drug lord from its past. The government has invested much in municipal improvements over the past 30 years in an effort to combat the violence, hardship, and criminality in the city. As a result, enormous changes have taken place, including the construction of Colombia's sole metro system. Additionally, the city has made a concerted effort to remove locations with ties to Escobar and replace them with parks and cultural hubs. For instance, the Monaco Building, where Escobar previously resided, was demolished barely two years ago and rebuilt with a memorial park honoring the victims of the drug lord's bloody rule.

8 There’s Speculation as to Whether His Death Was Suicide

Pablo Escobar was apprehended and killed on the roofs of some residences in Medellin, according to the United States DEA, although some claim that's not what actually happened. You know, the kingpin was skilled at dodging the cops, according to Escobar's son. He adhered to stringent guidelines to keep himself and his family safe, including going unnoticed, avoiding phone calls, and other measures. Escobar called his kid on a phone line while being aware that the DEA was after him and was actively listening to his calls. He gave his son a safety warning throughout the call and gave a strange type of farewell. Only a few hours later, Escobar was fatally shot by the DEA after being ambushed on surrounding rooftops. Although many claim that the investigative work was responsible for this, the conduct does seem peculiar. Many people are left to wonder if Escobar really wanted to be apprehended and was ready for his reign as the despot of Medellin to come to an end.

Pablo Escobar genuinely had a strong affection for his family, despite the carnage and damage he inflicted upon the world. Pablo Escobar struck a deal with the Colombian government in 1991, agreeing to serve time behind bars in return for being spared extradition to the US. He had a private jail erected where he would spend the remainder of his sentence. As you might expect, the kingpin constructed something that was quite different from a prison. Instead, he built a massive party house that had a bar, a nightclub, and a room for a pool. He was frequently visited and led an opulent life. Even though he was hidden from the public's perspective, he thought he was living the high life.

A bomb detonated on this property in 1993, just months before the kingpin was shot and executed. It had been one of Escobar's most valued possessions before that. Escobar's gardener/guard remained in the house even after the bombing, residing there illegally and giving narco tours to anyone interested in seeing it. In other areas of the city, he gave the poor staggering sums of money in exchange for favors and to purchase their silence. As a result, many of the city's less fortunate residents looked up to him as someone who was trying to improve their lot in life. Pablo even decided to try his hand at running for president because of how well-liked he had become! His campaign was so effective that he probably would have won the presidency had Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, the justice minister, not spoken out publicly against the drug lord's crimes.
