I didn't expect THAT!
One person's passion is another person's shock
Something funny happened at church.
I sat next to a very proper older lady: we're talking 2 inch black heels, pleated skirt reaching right below the knees, nice blouse and white gloves (yes, that kind of old fashioned proper!)
In front of us sat a guy, maybe in his mid 20's, little less proper, wearing some old blue jeans about 3 sizes too big, sneakers, a striped polo shirt (also 3 sizes too big), and haircut that he probably received during the Bush presidency. Throughout the service he was participating, but was definitely not into it, every time we stood up, he had to pull up his pants, and pull down his shirt, as the first was sliding down, and the second riding up. We made it through the Mass, and at the end when the Priest was about to give the blessing, we stood up again, and the young man, obviously relieved that he made it for the entire service, instead of pulling up the pants, and pulling down the shirt as usual, stood up, and stretched his hands toward the heavens, and at that very moment his so very loose pants fell down to his knees, exposing his backside. That lady nearly fainted! I never saw anyone blush so quick so much! I won't describe the entire picture here, but by the expression on her face you could tell that what she was witnessing in front of her eyes was something that she hasn't seen since the free Hippie era back in the '60's! It was a sight to behold! No, not him, her! She looked over to me for some relief to her sudden surprise, and all I could do was burst out in laughter!
She will remember that Mass for the rest of her life, I will remember her overwhelming rush of emotions at the sight that enfolded before her, and I believe that guy will not remember anything. I still see him receiving the Priest's blessing oblivious to the fact that he'll be the talking stalk of all of her ladies friends in the coming weeks as she'll describe moment by moment that day when at the church she saw so much more than she bargained for....
Life has a way to surprise us in the most unexpected moments. I think you're more likely to be surprised daily by unexpected events, than you'd be a candidate to be hit by lightening in a hundred lifetimes. Surprises are to be taken lightly, with a smile or a giggle. Nobody is so important (although they may think themselves to be), that we could find the hilarious in the ordinary, and then react appropriately to the hilarity that ensued. Life gets better when you smile, and even best if you laugh. I know somebody who recently signed up for ''Laughter Yoga'', she used to be a very stressed out, lips always pursed, stiff like an ironing board, person. She used to plan, pre-plan, having plan A, B, C...... all the way to Z, and when she ran out of letters, she's use the Greek Alphabet next. And then every plan had a subplan, because ''you never know'' as she used to say. That was then, but now she's perfecting her ''Laughter Yoga''(well, she's very competitive, so no wonder she has a need to be #1 in that, too), and her demeanor eased up a lot, a whole lot, mind you! She can find the funny in the most serious, and sometimes inappropriate for laughter, situations. When her friends see her now, they immediately aske: ''who are you, and what have you done with Beatrice?'', to which she just answers with her newly-discovered, booming laughter.
Good for her!
