By Jide OkonjoPublished 7 days ago 3 min read

Nigerian singer Ayra Starr is making waves across the world. She released her sophomore album The Year I Turned 21 not too long ago and since then has been doing press and promotion for it. One thing for sure is that Ayra's fame has risen, and with that comes its drawbacks. In a new interview with MTV Base, Ayra Starr talks about her new album and also talks about an experience that happened in the airport that reinforced one of the drawbacks of fame. Here's what Ayra said.

First, speaking about her current favorite songs from album The Year I Turned 21, which song was the hardest to do, and opening up about collaborations, Ayra Starr said:

AYRA STARR: I feel like right now, my favorites are between "Birds Sing of Money", "21" and "Orun". "The Kids Are Alright" was one of the hardest to do because it was a very emotional session and everybody was so emotional, cuz y'know the song is about loss and losing a loved one. For collaborations, I just wanted people that I would sound sonically amazing with. And all these artistes on the album, I love their music and I was like okay, let's try. Like, working with Seyi Vibez was amazing. I knew sonically, we would sound good and it came out just how I heard it in my head.

Then, speaking about the experience she had in the airport that gave her a very strong reality check about being famous, Ayra Starr said:

AYRA STARR: There is no such thing as privacy, trust me. Even when you want it to be private.

Something happened the other day when I was in the airport. The staff stopped me to check my bag, and then as they were checking us, the staff there was like "can I take a selfie?" I looked at him with so much disappointment. I was like really? I told him "sorry, I just woke up," and he said "it doesn't matter." I said "Please please please!" He was now like "Ah okay, why are you shouting, Ayra Starr?" I was like oh, fuck. There's no such thing as privacy.
