Why I Now Regret Some of the Roles I Acted in Nollywood - Mercy Johnson

Mercy Johnson talks maturity

By Jide OkonjoPublished 2 years ago 3 min read

When one starts out in any new field, they want to be the best at what they do. They want to climb up the ladder and shine in their field more than anybody else in that field has shined before, and so they go above and beyond to stand out.

When you're an actor, this means taking any jobs you can find, doing what other actors or actresses might be uncomfortable to do, and basically doing whatever you can to stand out in the field. But then what happens when years later you are now established in that field? For some people, they look at their journey there and are happy with all the decisions they made on their way to getting there. For some others, they look back and there are some regrets that they have in some of the decisions they made.

For actress Mercy Johnson, looking back on her career now, there are some decisions she wishes she would have made differently, and the 38 year old actress is explaining why. Here's what Mercy said in an interview with Goldmyne.

Mercy Johnson

Speaking about why she can no longer do certain things like go naked or do romantic scenes in movies, Mercy Johnson said:

When I do that, what would the younger girls do? When you grow past a certain level, you try to go ahead and do better. For me, you don’t need people to tell you what’s right or wrong

Age is telling on me. I’ve grown past that level, I’m answerable to too many people: my husband and my kids. I hate to embarrass them in any way. My daughter is growing. She gets hold of my phone sometimes, begins to Google, and goes like, ‘Mum, my friends said…’ And they’re very inquisitive.

I don’t think it [playing nude scenes] is something I want to do to make my kids question me in any way or have something in their mind that they want to ask and they can’t.

My sense of maturity is better, my judgments are better. Some of the errors I made in the past are things that I wouldn’t do now. Some choices I made back then I wouldn’t make now.

What is very funny is that one of the things that Mercy Johnson was revered for, especially back in the day, was her ability to take on any kind of role, even roles that many other actresses at the time would have passed on. It's so interesting what comes with time, and starting a family, and how much that changes a person.

What do you think? Do you think Mercy Johnson is right to not go to these places anymore in her films? Or do you think that as an actress, she should be willing to do whatever the script demands of her as she did back in the day?
