The Voicemail From the Dead
A voice she thought was gone forever… came back after years of silence.
Lily had not listened to her old voicemails for years.
After her mother died, she changed her phone.
She changed numbers.
She even changed cities.
But she could never change what she felt inside.
Her mother’s death had left a space in her heart that nothing could fill.
It happened on a quiet winter morning.
A sudden heart attack.
No warning.
No goodbye.
One moment her mother was laughing in the kitchen.
The next moment, she was gone.
Lily remembered everything clearly.
The hospital room.
The cold silence.
The trembling hands of doctors.
And her own voice screaming her mother’s name again and again.
After the funeral, Lily stopped checking her old phone completely.
She could not bear to hear her mother’s voice in recordings.
It felt too painful.
Too real.
So she saved nothing.
She deleted everything she could find.
Or so she thought.
Years passed slowly.
Life moved forward on the outside.
But inside, Lily was still stuck in that hospital room.
She grew up.
She got a job.
She moved into a small apartment in the city.
But every night, she still felt alone.
One rainy evening, while cleaning her old storage box, she found her first phone.
It was dusty.
Old.
Almost forgotten.
She had not touched it in five years.
For a moment, she just stared at it.
Her hands shook slightly.
She told herself she would not turn it on.
But something inside her pushed her to do it anyway.
She charged the phone slowly.
Then she turned it on.
The screen lit up weakly.
Old photos appeared.
Old messages loaded slowly.
And then she saw it.
Voicemail (1)
Unknown date.
Lily froze.
She had no memory of it.
Her heart began beating faster.
She pressed play.
At first, there was only static.
Then a soft sound of breathing.
And then—
Her mother’s voice.
“Lily…”
Lily dropped the phone instantly.
Her entire body went cold.
It could not be real.
Her mother was gone.
Her mind told her it must be a glitch.
A saved file.
A broken recording.
But deep inside, she knew that voice too well.
She slowly picked up the phone again.
Hands shaking.
Tears already forming.
She pressed play again.
This time, she listened carefully.
“Lily… if you ever hear this, I want you to know something important.”
The voice sounded weak but warm.
Alive in a way that made her chest hurt.
Lily sat down on the floor slowly.
The room felt smaller.
The air felt heavier.
The voicemail continued.
“I am sorry I could not stay longer with you. I tried to be strong, but my body was failing. I didn’t want you to see me suffer.”
Lily covered her mouth to stop herself from crying loudly.
Her mother’s voice was calm.
Soft.
Full of love.
“I know you will blame yourself. But please don’t. You were the best thing in my life.”
Lily’s tears fell onto the floor.
She could barely breathe.
The recording paused for a few seconds.
Then came the final part.
“There is something I never told you… something I wanted to say before I left…”
A long silence followed.
Only static filled the phone.
Lily leaned closer.
Her heart felt like it was breaking again.
Then the voice came back.
“I will always be with you… even when you think I am gone.”
The voicemail ended.
Silence returned.
But it did not feel empty anymore.
It felt heavy.
Lily sat on the floor for a long time holding the phone close to her chest.
She did not move.
She did not speak.
Outside, rain slowly hit the window.
Inside, memories came back like waves.
She remembered her mother’s hands cooking food.
Her mother fixing her hair before school.
Her mother sitting beside her during hard nights.
All the small things she never valued enough at the time.
Now they felt priceless.
Lily played the voicemail again and again that night.
Not because she wanted to feel pain.
But because she wanted to feel her mother close again.
For the first time in years, she did not feel completely alone.
It was not magic.
It was not supernatural.
It was memory.
It was love preserved in sound.
And even though her mother was gone from the world…
her voice was still alive in one small recording.
A reminder that love does not disappear.
It only changes form.
That night, Lily finally whispered into the empty room.
“I miss you, Mom.”
And for the first time in years, she smiled through her tears.
Because sometimes the dead do not return…
but their love finds a way to speak again when we need it most.
