the two friends

loyalty

By mohamed saadPublished 3 months ago 7 min read

Amjad and Maher were two boys who lived in the same neighborhood.

Their families faced nearly the same financial struggles, although Maher's situation was slightly better than Amjad's.

Because of their difficult circumstances, both boys began working at an early age. Together, they found jobs in a small carpentry workshop.

They worked hard every day.

They learned quickly.

And they dreamed of building better lives for themselves and their families.

But there was one difference between them.

Amjad had several younger brothers and sisters who depended on him.

Every coin he earned mattered.

Every meal mattered.

Every sacrifice mattered.

Many days, he chose to give up his own food so that his younger siblings would have enough to eat.

Each morning, the two boys walked to work together.

And each morning, Amjad arrived without breakfast.

At first, Maher did not notice.

But as the days passed, he began to realize that his friend never seemed to eat anything before work.

One day, while they were taking a short break, Maher quietly offered him part of his meal.

Amjad hesitated.

Pride made him want to refuse.

Hunger made him want to accept.

Finally, he took a small piece and thanked his friend.

From that day on, Maher made it a habit.

Every morning, he brought enough food for both of them.

He never spoke about charity.

He never made Amjad feel ashamed.

Instead, he simply sat beside him, broke the bread into two equal pieces, and shared it with a smile.

Day after day, year after year, the two friends shared their meals, their dreams, and their struggles.

Neither of them knew that these simple acts of kindness would one day become the foundation of a friendship that time itself could not break.

The two friends continued working together for many years.

As time passed, they grew older and became skilled craftsmen. What had once been a simple job had become a profession they understood deeply and practiced with pride.

Yet each of them carried a different dream in his heart.

Amjad wanted to increase his income so he could provide a better life for his younger brothers and sisters. The responsibilities he carried had only grown heavier with time, and he was determined to help his family rise above hardship.

Maher, on the other hand, dreamed of a quiet and stable life close to his family. He valued peace, familiarity, and the comfort of remaining near the people he loved.

Life continued to move forward.

Opportunities appeared.

Challenges emerged.

And little by little, the world around them began to change.

One day, Amjad met the owner of a large furniture factory.

The man quickly noticed his talent, creativity, and dedication to his craft. More importantly, he saw in Amjad someone capable of bringing fresh ideas and new designs to the business.

After several meetings, the factory owner made him an attractive offer.

It was the kind of opportunity that could change a person's future.

Still, Amjad hesitated.

Before making a decision, he went to the one person whose opinion he trusted most.

Maher.

That evening, the two friends sat together as they had done countless times before.

Amjad explained the offer and the possibilities that came with it.

When he finished speaking, Maher smiled warmly.

"This is your opportunity," he said.

"You've spent your whole life sacrificing for your family. This chance could help you support your brothers and sisters better than ever before."

He paused before adding,

"And don't forget that you're planning to get married soon. A man must think about building his future as well."

Amjad remained silent for a moment.

Deep inside, he knew his friend was right.

Sometimes the road toward a dream requires leaving familiar places behind.

A few months later, after years of genuine friendship, shared struggles, and countless meals divided between them, the two friends parted ways.

Not because of disagreement.

Not because of distance in their hearts.

But because life was calling each of them toward a different path.

One followed opportunity.

The other followed stability.

Yet neither of them imagined how greatly their lives would change—or that one day fate would bring them together again in a way neither could have foreseen.

Years passed.

Then more years followed.

Time changed many things in the lives of both friends.

Amjad's life transformed dramatically.

The opportunity he had accepted years earlier proved to be the turning point he had hoped for. The factory owner had not only valued his skills but had also rewarded him with a share of the profits.

Amjad worked tirelessly.

Every day, he introduced new ideas, fresh designs, and innovative techniques.

Customers were impressed by the quality and creativity of the furniture produced by the factory. Orders increased. The company's reputation spread from one city to another, and before long, the factory became widely known for its excellence.

As the business grew, so did Amjad's success.

The young carpenter who had once struggled to afford a meal had become a wealthy and respected man.

His brothers and sisters completed their education.

His family enjoyed a comfortable life.

Many of the dreams he had carried in his heart as a young man had finally come true.

Yet despite all his success, there was one thing he never forgot.

Maher.

Whenever Amjad celebrated a new achievement, memories of his old friend would quietly return.

He would remember the small carpentry workshop.

The long days of hard work.

The shared dreams.

And most of all, the meals they had divided between them when life had been difficult.

Sometimes he would sit alone and whisper to himself:

"I wish Maher had been here with me. Together, we could have created something truly remarkable."

The years had brought him wealth, but they had never erased his gratitude.

One day, after a long period of success and prosperity, Amjad made a decision.

He would return to his hometown.

He longed to see his family.

He wanted to walk once again through the streets where he had spent his childhood.

But above all, he wanted to find the friend who had stood beside him when he had nothing.

The friend who had shared his food without making him feel ashamed.

The friend whose kindness had remained alive in his heart for all those years.

As his car approached the old neighborhood, Amjad looked through the window at the familiar streets.

Everything seemed smaller than he remembered.

Yet the memories felt larger than ever.

And somewhere among those memories was a friend he hoped life had treated kindly.

When Amjad finally returned home, he spent a few days with his family, listening to their stories and enjoying the comfort of familiar faces.

But there was someone he could not stop thinking about.

Maher.

The friend who had stood beside him when life had been at its hardest.

The friend who had shared his bread when he had nothing.

Without waiting any longer, Amjad set out to find him.

His first stop was the old carpentry workshop where they had once worked together as young men.

To his surprise, the workshop was closed.

The doors were locked.

The windows were covered with dust.

He asked several people in the neighborhood, but no one could give him a clear answer.

A feeling of concern settled in his heart.

So he went directly to Maher's house.

The moment he saw his friend, he understood that something was wrong.

Maher looked exhausted.

The years had left their mark on his face.

More painful still, he was struggling financially. For months, he had been without work and had been doing everything he could to support his family.

Neither man spoke about hardship at first.

They simply sat together.

Two old friends reunited after many years apart.

After a while, Amjad ordered a meal for them.

When the food arrived and was placed on the table, Maher's eyes filled with tears.

He lowered his head, unable to hide his emotions.

Seeing this, Amjad felt tears gathering in his own eyes.

"My friend," he said softly, "you were the first to show me kindness when I needed it most. You fed me when I was hungry, but what you gave me was far greater than food. You fed me with loyalty, dignity, and sincere friendship."

The two friends shared the meal together, just as they had done so many years before.

For a moment, it felt as though time had never separated them.

A week later, Amjad returned.

This time, he arrived with unusual excitement in his voice.

"Now," he said with a smile, "now is the right time."

Maher looked at him in confusion.

"The right time for what?"

Amjad handed him a set of documents.

"I spent the past week searching for the owners of the workshop. I purchased it from the heirs and paid every debt attached to it."

Maher stared at him in disbelief.

Amjad continued,

"The workshop is yours."

Silence filled the room.

"I am giving it to you with love," Amjad said. "Years ago, you shared half of your food with me without hesitation. Today, I want to repay a small part of that kindness. Those who plant goodness will one day harvest goodness."

Maher's eyes filled with tears once again.

But he slowly shook his head.

"No, my friend."

Amjad looked surprised.

"No?"

Maher smiled.

"I cannot accept it that way."

"Why not?"

Maher placed a hand on his friend's shoulder.

"Because we built our friendship by sharing everything. We shared hardship. We shared dreams. We shared bread."

His voice trembled with emotion.

"If I work in this workshop, then half of the profit will be mine, and half will be yours."

Amjad tried to interrupt, but Maher continued.

"Just as we once divided a meal between us, do not deprive me of sharing loyalty with you."

For a moment, neither man spoke.

Then both of them smiled.

And in that simple room, surrounded by memories and gratitude, they understood a truth that many people spend a lifetime searching for:

True friendship is not measured by what is given.

It is measured by the love with which it is given.
