The Summer I Thought Had Ended Comes Back to Stir My Heart Again
I still haven’t dared tell him how much my heart shakes every time he messages me.

Sometimes we think that when the seasons change, the feelings we once had will fade slowly with the wind and rain. We believe time will erase that flutter in our chest, turning it into nothing more than a faint memory. We never guess that some things lie hidden deep in our hearts, waiting to be called back again someday.
It all began in a scorching‑hot summer. The thick heat made time feel slow and endless. That was when I started talking to someone — not a planned meeting, just messages sent back and forth, until little by little we grew used to each other.
Every time his name popped up on my phone screen, my heart would shake beyond my control. It was a sweet feeling, with a little thrill every time I read his words. Back then I thought maybe something good was finally coming my way — yet that happiness did not last as long as I had hoped.
Around that time, my work piled up until I barely had time to rest. Many things weighed on my mind, leaving me worn‑out and heavy‑hearted. I did not mean to pull away from him, yet the chaos of daily life seemed to draw me apart from him on its own. At first I replied more slowly, then we talked less and less — until at last we stopped speaking altogether, quietly. There was no clear goodbye, only a gap between messages that grew longer each day.
When we drifted apart, I tried telling myself it was just a passing phase. Summer had ended, so those feelings would end too. I threw myself into work, sorted through the things that weighed on me, and tried to grow stronger. I thought that as time went by, that flutter in my chest would fade away, becoming only an old story from the past.
Time passed, and we moved into late rainy season. The sky was often overcast, with light drizzle — sometimes heavy downpours. The sound of rain tapping against the window made life feel quieter than the summer before. I thought everything was settling into calm — until one day my phone screen lit up, and a new message popped in.
It was him.
The first thing I felt when I saw his name was surprise, followed by a flutter deep in my chest — as if the summer I had thought was gone had come back to warm my heart all over again. I had not expected it to still be like this. I did not even like that I still felt this way — that just seeing his name could make my heart race so fast.
He had not said anything special, only reached out again, talking about ordinary things as if there had never been that long gap between us. Yet inside me, something had changed — and something had stayed the same. We started chatting again, but I no longer dared let my heart go as freely as before.
Deep down, I wanted to grow close to him again — to send good‑morning greetings every day, to share photos I had taken, to tell him little things that happened in my day, to let him know me better. But every time that thought came to me, I pulled myself back.
I did not know what he was thinking. He might have only missed an old friend and wanted someone to chat with, or he might have felt something more — I had no way to know, and I was too afraid to ask. I feared that if I showed my feelings too openly, I would get hurt again, right after I had just started to recover from what had happened before.
He would probably never know that just a short message from him could make my heart shake this much. He did not know that every time I saw his message, I would stare at the screen for a moment before daring to type a reply. He did not know how many small wishes I kept hidden inside, wishes I had never dared send to him.
Until this morning, when the late‑rain sky was still soft and cloudy, I made up my mind to send him something — just a good‑morning message, plus a little gif of a puppy with “Good Morning” written on it. It looked very short, very ordinary, like just a casual greeting, nothing complicated. Yet inside that short message lay feelings I had not dared to say out loud.
It was a small hope — a quiet way to say I still thought of him, that I was glad we were talking again. But there was also hesitation mixed with fear: the fear that these feelings might only be my own one‑sided dream.
Sometimes I sit wondering why my heart is like this — why it still shakes every time I see his name or his messages. Sometimes I feel a little sad that I have to keep these feelings hidden, not daring to show them. But sometimes I feel quietly romantic — that there is still someone who can make my heart race, even after so much time and changing seasons.
I do not know what the future holds. I do not know if this rainy season will end along with our story, or if something more will come after. I only know that for now, my heart still shakes every time he comes near — even if it is only a short message across a phone screen.
Sometimes human stories do not have clear beginnings and endings. There are only changing seasons, periods of distance, and little flutters in the heart — things that lie hidden for a long time, until they are called back again by nothing more than a short message and a puppy gif sent in the morning.
