The Source Within: Why True Love Begins with Loving Yourself
To Nourish the World, First Fill Your Own Cup
"I want to see you filled with love and nourishment, not self-sacrificing." — Virginia Satir
When you fully love yourself, love will automatically overflow!
01. First-Rate Love Means Becoming Love Itself
There are often scenes like this in TV dramas: the male lead sacrifices himself for the female lead, saying before he leaves, "You must live well."
And the female lead always cries out desperately, "No! I don't want you to go! I want you to live, to stay with me!"
Sacrificing oneself to love others is not a first-rate state of being, nor is it a practice worth advocating. Behind this seemingly noble behavior lies a fundamental misunderstanding of what it means to "love and serve others."
The male lead clearly knows that the female lead deeply loves him. How can she be happy when he leaves? How can she live well?
First-rate love is not about sacrificing oneself to fulfill others.
First-rate love is about first becoming love itself—becoming the source of love—and then continuously passing that love on to everyone around you, filling them up, and ultimately becoming one with love.
This is unconditional love. Many of us, especially our parents' generation, hold the belief that living means constantly loving, serving, and giving to others while never thinking of ourselves.
While serving others is undoubtedly a noble moral quality to be encouraged, there is a problem: can you guarantee you will truly serve them well?
Often, our sacrifices not only fail to gain recognition and gratitude, but they also trigger doubt and conflict, prompting deep reflection.
02. Only by Helping Yourself Can You Truly Help Others
World-renowned spiritual teacher Bishan Anjumi wrote in his book: "In China, there's a large belief system that helping others is good. This belief system is excellent, except for one problem—you may not be able to truly help others well!"
You can only effectively help others by helping yourself first.
Many people believe they don't deserve anything, that there is no need to be good to themselves, and that others are far more important. This is not true. No one is more important than you; you are the source of your own life!
When you lack love, you are deficient and empty, like an empty cup, unable to give anything. Even if you try to give love, you can't, because it all originates from the mind and the false ego. Love doesn't exist there; it is all an illusion.
Focus on things that make you happy. When you are happy, your cup will be filled with love from the universe until it overflows, and you will begin to help others without even realizing it. Your family will become happy, your colleagues will become happy, and everyone around you will become happy.
Invest time in yourself. Everyone around you will fall in love with you because your presence makes them happy, and everything you do for them will stem from unconditional love. You won't feel resentment; giving will feel effortless, and it will make you feel good.
So start making yourself happy—starting right now!
03. Only Those Who Love Themselves Can Attract and Pass On Love
When you lack love, you are deficient and empty, like an empty cup. Even if you want to give love, you cannot, because it originates from the mind and the false ego.
This issue frequently plays out in real life, especially in parenting:
For example, many parents who feel unfulfilled place all their hopes on their children, yearning for them to succeed and achieve great things. As a result, they flood their children with extracurricular tutoring and after-school classes, overwhelming them with pressure.
Parents believe that setting high standards, enforcing strict requirements, and enduring hardship for their children is the only way to truly love them, be worthy of them, and ensure their future happiness.
In reality, this is by no means the best contribution parents can provide. It is merely a manifestation of their own obsessions: they want their children to live according to a predetermined plan, driven by a desire for control. This desire stems from the parents' fear, anxiety, and unease about the future—from their own lack of love, and even from deep-seated insecurities.
There is another type of parent who sacrifices their own happiness for their children—giving everything, scrimping, and saving while living a life of self-imposed poverty. In the end, they not only fail to gain their children's understanding and respect, but they also face resentment and disdain. It is a truly tragic situation.
The root cause of these common dynamics is simple: not knowing how to love oneself. How can you pass on love to your children when you yourself are empty and devoid of it?
Consider another example: a college student pursuing someone he likes. To win her heart, he exhausts himself doing favors for her, only to receive a perfunctory "thank you"—gratitude without love.
How do you truly win someone's heart? It is never by demeaning yourself or acting like a subservient servant. Instead, it is about living your life to the fullest, showcasing your unique charm, and naturally attracting others.
If you blossom, the butterflies will come. This process is how you convey authentic love.
Similarly, parents belittling themselves does not elevate their children. It only teaches children to think, "I'm worthless, I'm not good enough, I'm not worthy." In their parents' selfless sacrifice, children see no nourishment—only intense expectations and unbearable burdens.
Exploiting yourself does not nourish others. Pouring your food into my bowl and watching you beg with an empty cup brings me no comfort. Sacrificing yourself to meet my needs does not bring me happiness. Children are like mirrors; they clearly reflect their parents' inner state.
Only when you love yourself can you pass that love on to your children, and only then can they love you in return. Only when you respect yourself will your children respect you and heed your teachings, because they will naturally yearn to become respected like you.
Respect is not built on your sacrifices, but on your brilliance.
04. When You Fully Love Yourself, Love Flows Automatically
We often think about loving and serving others, but we struggle to do so because we are running on empty. We try to give love, but that love comes from ego and expectation, where true love cannot exist.
However, when we are genuinely full of love, we find that it flows outward effortlessly. Unconsciously, it blossoms, filling the world and nourishing everyone around us.
When you are overflowing, you don't need to force yourself to give; you will naturally give love without even realizing it.
Therefore, the highest level of serving others is letting love overflow automatically.
Before you try to love and serve others, please love yourself first. Do not worry that doing so is selfish. In fact, it is precisely through self-love that you earn genuine respect. Only when you are full of light and love can you truly serve others well, inspiring them to gravitate toward you and become loving, respected people themselves.
