The Girl In the Piano Room
Inspired by ‘Antidote’ by Faith Marie
The girl tentatively tiptoed into the hallowed room. Even her breathing echoed around her ears. The room was painted a soft dove grey, the floor full of shiny tiles. There was a single window, large in size, with five panes, four at the bottom shaped like rectangles and one lone semi-circle at the top; it let in a pretty stream of light, revealing a grand piano.
The ebony wood was polished so that the light bounced off it like a child's ball. The leather seat looked soft enough to sleep on, the keys looked like they were begging to be played.
The girl smiled to herself. Her wavy, grey hair cascaded down her shoulders as she moved, dark blue at the roots. Her brown eyes ate up the room, the colour so light they seemed amber yet they seemed to have a tint that made them seem green at times. Her top lip was very pointed, her bottom lip very round and full. They were naturally a pretty coral colour and beneath them were almost perfect teeth, save for one cracked tooth far back in her mouth.
The young girl's skin was quite pale while her cheeks were rosy and warm. Her hands seemed almost frozen, so cold you may think you can see ice on the on her nails; those nails were immaculate, not stubby nor claw-like, but instead long and clean. Her body had some gentle curves, an average size, and though her hips were a little wider than she liked sometimes, she was content with her shape.
She moved some strands of hair behind her ear as she walked towards the piano. The girl's slight steps were fast despite their size and she got to the piano rather quickly. She stroked the wood, smooth beneath her fingertips until she felt the dents closer to the keys of the instrument. She felt dizzy as she tapped her finger on middle C, perfectly in tune. The keys were so sensitive. She immediately sat down, a shuver running down her spine as she savoured the piano’s sound.
Comfortable in the worn leather seat, the girl quickly started to play some C Major octaves, two in a row and flawless. She then did G Major, then F major. She smiled. The sound rang around the room, filling it with the beautiful sounds of the instrument. She stopped abruptly, listening to the echo of the music,
Then she began the opening chords of Antidote. Once the intro ended, she started to sing, her sweet voice soaring above the volume of the piano. After a few moments, she reached the bridge. Her voice haunted the acoustics of where she sat, enveloping the air around.
"I tried to find my reflection on the glass
But all I ever saw were the things I lacked
All the smudges on the mirror made me go insane
All I ever thought I was
Was a mistake..."
Her fingers pressed down on the keys, hitting every note perfectly as she began the outro of the song, tears in her own eyes, and tears in the eyes of the one who preyed upon her, while she sat, unknowing.
"No one knows what goes on up inside my head
There's a new kind of poison and it's starting to spread
No one knows what goes on up inside my head
Up inside my head
Up inside my head..."
Gentle clapping was heard in the room, ricochetting off the walls and making her ears ring. Shocked, she looked up to see someone, someone who had been watching and listening intently. A very beautiful someone.
A girl.
