The Beauty Of Spring Colors

In Southern Illinois

She was walking for miles to the place that her and her husband used to enjoy, because it was finally a nice day out. She had been cooped up in an old dusty brick home for what felt like ages. It had only been about three months through the winter days, but they seemed to be never ending.

Early Sunday morning she awoke in her master bedroom with sun rays shining through her red velvet curtains. She could feel the warmth behind them and knew in an instant that today was going to be a nice day. In fact, it would be the first nice day of the year. She could not let this day go to waste, so she showered and got dressed as quickly as possibly. She threw her hair over her head and swiftly put it in a scrunchy and ran down the stairs. She ran as soft as a feather. She didn't make one peep, all she could hear were the birds out her kitchen window chirping. As the coffee pot spit and sputtered she watched the birds out the window eating the nectar she had put out the other day. It was a magnificent view that made her fall in love with nature all over again.

After her breakfast and morning coffee she slipped on her walking shoes and headed out the door. Her home was set off the main gravel road with trees all around. She walked down her long driveway looking at the trees that started to bloom. She was also paying close attention to every single bird that flew within her view. There was a cardinal on her mail box that looked very content on eating the worm that was still half hanging out of it's mouth.

The grass was finally growing again and was so luscious. "You should have seen it" she thought. It was her favorite part of summer. Cutting the grass was another story, but when it looked like this and smelled the way it did, she was very happy. She just stood there at the end of her drive way taking everything in.

She closed her eyes and slowly breathed in the fresh air. It was so beautiful, "I wish you were here to enjoy this with me," she thought as she enjoyed every single second of this moment. The beauty of spring colors could take all the sadness in her life far far away to a place that she could not see or touch. For a small moment she could put the loss of her husband out of her mind. For a second in this day, she could feel happy again and pretend that he was within all the colors of spring.

As the soft yet warm wind kissed her cheek, she felt like he was right there with her and it gave her strength to move forward and enjoy the rest of this day.

She walked down the old country road that would eventually lead to a main road that all the cars would drive to get into town. It lasted for miles and almost at the end of the road was a spot that had the most beautiful trees. She planned to walk to that spot, because it had more meaning to her than anything else.

A few cars passed her as she walked waving as they went by. She gave them a smile and a small wave and watched them slowly drive away until they vanished from view.

This was a small rural area, so everyone knew everyone. In the off chance that they didn't know each other, they would still wave to be polite. It was something that the people in southern IL did.

She kept walking and stopped to take the view in a few times and to catch her breath, but finally made it to the spot she had been trying to get to. On the edge of the gravel country road sat six beautiful trees that exhibited the beauty of spring. But for her, that wasn't all it was. At this spot years ago, her husband proposed to her and every year on the first nice day of spring they would walk to these trees and have a picnic. They would sit, talk, laugh, and have a great time. They made sure not to have anything else to do that day, so they could enjoy the moment together and have it last as long as possible.

She missed those days, but weirdly enough, she felt safe under these trees. It was like he was there showing her through the colors of spring that everything will be okay.
