friendship
C.S Lewis got it right: friendship is born when one person says to another: "What! You too? I thought I was the only one!"
Genesis #1-Bound by Hate
Time is coming around again, the fall leaves are in full force. The winds that blow colder sending a chill through those who want to weather it. As the creatures instinctually prepare to slow down and start reading for the cold winter, using all their energy to save their feasts either as extra fat or in their nests, that pull to survive cuts through the cold. This time of year reminds me of the past that is behind my thoughts of a friend I used to spend these times with. Coming by his house driving up to the back porch getting waived in by a skinny form in a baggie worn. Miami Dolphins hoodie billows of cigarette smoke and Hot breath hitting frosty air. A rocks glass full of an iceless rum and Pepsi. Watching a day full of football action cheering and uttering obscenities at the tv like it's an actual living being playing with our emotions. Such a chill time and back not having to prove anything to each other just being, existing in a friendship so easy it was second nature. That seems like an eternity ago. The bridge we burned is all but smoldering now. We both fed the flames of animosity with what we each thought was an immutable truth. We let ”our truth” take precedence over our childhood, our twenties and our adult histories. So many memories set ablaze and all but forgotten through the haze and division of our ideas. Its crazy we were friends because we had so much in common a within a few heated arguments best friends were set ablaze and enemies rose from the ashes. All the time spent not even considering a future without the other now I don't know how there could ever be a time when we would ever speak again. Sometimes try to see a glimpse into his life through social media, mutual friends, and extended family. I'm not sure what one thing was the breaking point but after things were said that we're brought out, hateful things neither of us would've dredged up somehow we're unearthed and couldn't be buried again. Our race was never even a thought in our lives, now somehow the most important thing, issues that im sure we agreed on, now molehills turned into glacial, seemingly indefensible mountains.

Someone to Love
He looked at her, she looked at him and somehow by instinct they both started to sing loudly, "Is you is, or is you ain't my baby!" before laughing hysterically at each other. They often found themselves completing each other sentences, or one could be thinking something and the other would say it. The connection between Frey and Drea was so different for the both of them they thought it was weird till they would keep testing it to see if perhaps it was a fluke. To make matters even more interestingly, the two often would be dressed in similar color coordination when going out and never even communicated with the other about what they where going to wear.

The Work Trip
“Okay two pairs of pants, three shirts... Should I bring a nice dress or a casual dress?” I paced in front of my dresser. This was likely going to be my biggest convention yet. I still couldn't believe I'd been chosen to go. Here I was still only a level two in my career path and I was invited to go to the regional marketing convention!

An Apology for the Unknown
If someone asked my friends who I am as a person, there would probably be many positive things said about me. Even the negatives aren’t all that bad. But then again, I’m 30 years old. Ask 10-15 years ago, they still would’ve said positive words; but, not as many. Why? I was far more secretive. I didn’t want to let people in - for a plethora of reasons.

Betrayal is my middle name
I am a bad person. I made some bad choices, which I am ashamed of. But I cannot change the past. I betrayed one of my best friends in the worst way possible. I carry this burden with me since I was 19. I did not have the courage to say “I’m sorry” and take responsibility for my actions until I was 32.

Her Freedom, Our Connection
In 2012, I met a young woman that would forever add new depth to the meaning of the word "Freedom" for me. I'll start by telling you how she wound in Asbury Park, NJ, from halfway across the world, getting a tattoo with me. I have changed her name in this story for her safety.
