Ruh oh, here comes trouble

For weeks, Zara's friends had been relentless.

Every group chat ended the same way. You never come out anymore. One drink won't kill you. We're dragging you there if we have to.

She always had an excuse. Work. She was tired. Crowds weren't her thing. Loud music made her head ache. The truth was simpler. Letting loose had never come naturally to her. While everyone else seemed born knowing how to laugh without worrying, dance without overthinking, and flirt without stumbling over themselves, Zara felt like she had somehow missed the class where everyone learned how to simply... exist.

Eventually, after one too many pleading messages and a promise that they wouldn't keep her out all night, she finally gave in.

The bar pulsed with warm amber lights, lively conversation, and music that seemed to shake the floorboards. At first, she lingered close to the table, clutching her first drink like it was an emotional support accessory while her friends disappeared onto the dance floor.

Then came a second drink.

Then half of a third.

The knot wound tight inside her chest slowly unraveled.

Her laugh came easier. Her smile stayed a little longer. The world felt softer around the edges.

"So," one of her friends grinned, nudging her toward the crowd, "there's the Zara we knew was hiding."

Rolling her eyes with a laugh she barely recognized as her own, she finally let herself be pulled into the sea of dancing strangers.

That was when she noticed him.

He stood out without trying.

Tall enough to rise above the crowd, broad-shouldered without looking intimidating, dressed simply enough that no one would have guessed he belonged anywhere near wealth or celebrity. Dark hair framed a face that looked almost unfairly handsome, yet there wasn't an ounce of arrogance behind the gentle smile he wore.

Instead of approaching with rehearsed charm or swagger, he simply offered his hand.

"You look like you're finally having fun," he said.

She laughed.

"Barely."

"That's a good place to start."

His voice was warm, calm, and strangely reassuring.

Against every instinct that usually told her to overthink everything, she slipped her hand into his.

The music changed.

Their dancing started innocent enough, playful and lighthearted, but as the songs blended together and the night stretched on, the space between them slowly disappeared. They moved with the rhythm, laughing whenever one of them missed a step, their chemistry building naturally until it felt like they'd known each other far longer than the handful of hours they'd actually shared.

He never pushed.

Never crossed a line.

Every closer step came with an unspoken question, every smile giving her every opportunity to step away if she wanted.

Instead...

She stayed.

By the time the last call arrived, the city outside shimmered beneath the glow of streetlights, and the details of the evening blurred together into scattered flashes of laughter, dancing, quiet conversations, and the comforting warmth of his hand around hers.

...

Morning arrived far too quickly.

A beam of sunlight slipped through partially opened curtains, landing squarely across Zara's face.

She groaned softly, immediately regretting every drink she'd had the night before, then she stilled.

The bed beneath her wasn't hers.

The room wasn't hers.

The ceiling definitely wasn't hers.

Her eyes snapped open.

Silk sheets.

Dark wood furniture.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a skyline that looked like something out of a luxury magazine.

"...What?"

She sat upright far too fast, earning herself a pounding headache.

Memories drifted through the fog in frustrating fragments.

Music.

Laughing.

Dancing.

His smile.

A taxi.

Then... nothing clear after that.

The bathroom door opened.

The man from the bar stepped out, now dressed in a simple black T-shirt and jeans, his hair still damp from a shower.

The same gentle smile appeared the moment he noticed she was awake.

"Morning."

He looked almost... nervous.

"I'm really glad you're awake. I made coffee, if you'd like some."

Zara blinked.

"You... made coffee?"

"I figured it'd help."

He rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly.

"I wasn't sure how you take it, though."

That wasn't the response she'd expected from waking up in a stranger's penthouse.

Not even close.

Before she could ask another question, his phone began vibrating violently on the kitchen counter.

Once.

Twice.

Five times.

Ten.

He sighed the sigh of someone profoundly tired of being interrupted.

"I'm sorry."

He answered.

"I know."

"...No."

"I'm not coming."

"...Tell him I'll call later."

He hung up.

Immediately, it rang again.

Zara couldn't help glancing toward the screen.

The caller ID froze her.

Hawthorne Industries.

Another notification appeared.

Then another.

News alerts.

Business headlines.

Photos.

One image showed the man standing beside an older silver-haired gentleman in an expensive suit beneath flashing cameras.

The headline read:

RECLUSIVE SON OF BILLIONAIRE MAKES FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE IN YEARS

Her stomach dropped.

She looked from the phone...

...to him...

...then back to the headline.

"You..."

He winced before she could even finish.

"...Yeah."

"The famous millionaire's son?"

He gave an apologetic smile.

"I usually don't lead with that."

Silence.

A very long silence.

Zara slowly lowered herself back onto the edge of the bed, staring blankly into space as every memory from the previous night replayed in rapid succession.

She had danced with a charming stranger.

She had gone home with a random guy she'd met at a bar.

And she had spent the night with the famously reclusive heir to one of the richest families in the country.

Her friends were never going to let her live this down.

Not.

Ever.
