The evening sun cast an array of colors across the light blue sky creating amber, pink, and golden hues. Slowly the brilliant light was disappearing behind the coastal line. The watcher sighed with a moment of longing. His brown eyes watched the radiance like it was new to him. The sight is likened to a lover's embrace, slow, unrushed, and beautiful. He knew she was watching her version of the same sunset. He sighed remembering the wife he left with three children under the age of ten, a dog, and a kitty named tripod because it would only walk on three legs, why hell he didn’t know. He chuckled at the thought of the kitten tipping over and his wife’s love for all things living. He ached for one of her smiles, for her. He honores the love she held for him, never once complaining over his departure.

He honors the love she held for him, never once complaining over his departure.

The smile he held faded, his weathered face took on a look that he couldn’t put feelings into. He allowed his thoughts to linger on her face, her touch. The remaining sunlight began to fan, he continued to watch its brilliance holding onto the memories of his lover awaiting for his return. He couldn’t help but feel the swell of his heart at the love he missed and he knew she would be sitting along the pier waiting to see his ship along the horizon.

She sat watching the sun, she knew he was there with her watching the water dance for the evening sun. The lustrous beams of lights kissed the sea, flirting so effortlessly. Like lost lovers she could almost picture their sensual play as they joined in an intimate embrace. Their love was carried by the wind allowing the essence of the sea to rest upon her ever so softly. Her voice whispered goodnight to the lovers and to him so far away, She let her close briefly allowing a single tear to caress her cheek. Her sigh became audible wind hoping it would carry her love back to him. She continued to watch the lovers dance fading as the moon started it rise.

The lovers were separated by the invisible and held by the sea, a year has passed since they last kissed, last held hands in front of his departing ship. Their parting kisses held all their love. This was their dance with each tour. Yet not once did she allow her fear to be witnessed when saying goodbye. In front of him she would hold back her tears.

Yet when stepping away from him to mingle with the others, she would hold his love, his embrace and her tears close to her heart. Not once did has the emotion to show in front of the others or their children. She was after all a Navy-man's wife and she knew what it meant to be Navy strong! For now it was not a saying for the men who lived with the sea, it was also for the women who held down the home when away.

She danced the dance of the single wife for months or years. During most days she was occupied with time; dance practice, football tryouts, an occasional visit to the vet for a strange kitten, wiping away tears of failures and some glee. No task was left undone not even when studying to gain her degree while working full time.

She may shed a tear or two while watching others embrace but she would not grieve for her lover for one day his ship will be the one to break through the waves across the sea and his ship will rest along the shoreline where he will find her waiting for him.
