The Little Black Book

It’s dark and quiet out here behind these bushes, Tatum looks down at the little boy she hopes that the child will be okay. Her mistress gave her one order and that was to get rid of the child. Her mistress Lady Antoinette has been having an intimate relationship with the dark and handsome servant Charles. The Duke was unable to have sex and she uses her servant as her way of getting intimacy. After all, she was very young when the duke married her barely sixteen and he was over sixty. Tatum is the mistress’s loyal servant and in return, the mistress allows her certain things that other servants weren’t allowed. A better bedchamber and better food are two of the best perks. The mistress didn’t expect to become pregnant. She would not allow this child to mess up her situation. She was built small so it wasn’t difficult to hide the pregnancy until the last couple of months. When she reached her last stage of pregnancy, she decided to live in the country alone in her last month to have the child. She did not want the child because her husband could not have children. He has cancer down there and he would know that the child was not his. She had the child painfully and after it is born, she immediately sends for her faithful servant Tatum to come near. She trusted Tatum to get rid of the child immediately. Tatum looks down at the child at this very moment and felt sorry for him. She was squatting in a nearby bush in front of the orphanage. She was going to leave the child in front of the door with the belongings the mistress gave to her to leave with him. It was five in the morning she didn't see anyone; she walks over to the door and places the basket with the child in front of the door. She lay the bag beside him with a note. She knocks on the door and runs back behind the bushes. When she saw the nun take the child she left and went back into the darkness.

The nuns read the note and it said the boy’s name is George he was a beautiful baby. The nuns look for the parents of the child. They ask around and no one knew who had a baby recently. After some time passes and the nuns didn’t hear from anyone, they decided to raise the child in the orphanage. George grew up strong and was very smart in school. He was very quiet and didn’t talk much but that was his nature. He talks when he has something he wants to say. He was also honest. Whenever one of the other children did something wrong and George knew about it. The nuns would ask him what he saw and he told them with accuracy what was done. The other children did not want to play with him for that reason. George was comfortable being alone. He likes to read and learn new things in his spare time. He was helpful towards others and helped around the orphanage fixing and cleaning things. He was awkward looking he wore thick glasses and his hair was very long. He was the tallest boy in the orphanage standing over five feet eleven at the age of thirteen.

When he turns seventeen George graduates from high school. He was the tallest and the smartest in his class. His grades were impressive and he was picked as the Valedictorian of his class. He wanted to attend college unfortunately there was no money for him to attend. The orphanage lived on donations there wasn’t any money to send him there. One day while shopping with the sisters for the groceries for the orphanage there was a sign on the board it was advertising for a job as a taxi driver. George thought that would be a good job for him. He would be able to do a job like that and be comfortable doing it because it was something that he could do alone. He grabs the application and fills it out and mail it that very day. It was less than a week before they sent word to him for an interview. He grabs Jackie his favorite nun and told her the good news. He loves Jackie she paid special attention to him ensuring he ate and was taken care of. He loves Jackie as if she was his mom. "Now you can go out and gain your independence.” He was excited the sisters got together and bought him decent clothes for his interview. White shirt and black slacks he's grateful for everything they have done for him. When he returns from his interview excited the sisters were happy for him. They had baked a cake and had a little gathering to celebrate his good news. He had thoughts he would inquire about his mother as he moves around the world. He was told by the Sisters that he was left on the orphanage doorstep with a note. The note said to take care of my son George. It included the date he was born along with a bag with some personal items like his rattle, some clothes, a little black book they thought might just be a bible. It had a lock on it. The item in the bag was of good quality. The sisters thought the mother of the child had to be a Lady of stature. Whoever she was she did not want to be known.

In about a week George learns all his duties as a Driver. He likes his job and he got to know most of the people who live on his route. He likes Mrs. Mary especially she was always bringing him cookies whenever she knew he was working on that day. Mrs. Mary was always talking about her nieces that she wanted to introduce him to. She started this after George told her he was single. He would just nod his head and eat the tasty cookies. Sometimes the cookies serve to be his lunch. He worked for the Stoney Company. Any person who needed a ride could taxi him. Sometimes he would pick up rich drunks from the bars like Dukes and Lords whenever they needed to get home and didn’t want their wives to know where they were going. Whenever he was alone, he felt lonely. There was no one in his life. The sisters had gotten him a small room at the nearest inn he only had to pay a small fee to live there. He had everything he needed in his small apartment. He thought about how alone he was in the world. His mind often wonders about his mother and the reasons she left him at the orphanage.

He stops feeling sorry for himself and got up the next day and got ready for work. He leaves early than usual because he will have to drive the carriage and pick-up clients who needed a ride while driving down the road. He reaches Mrs. Mary's house and saw that she had small pieces of furniture she wanted to get rid of he decided to get rid of them for her. He gets out and picks them out to put them on the trunk of his carriage individually. He heard a noise a crackling sound. He looked around in the back of the house and saw nothing. Mrs. Mary's house was surrounded by a lot of deep trees and is considered to be the woods. He thought he should check on the sound it could be Mrs. Mary needing help. He walks back to the back of the house to see if there was anyone back there. He hears a deep growl from the woods in front of him as he turns around to go back. This was no ordinary growl. It was deep and strong he felt it under his feet. He turned back around slowly and look into the bushes where he thought he heard the growl come from. He couldn’t see anything but deep darkness. He had his flashlight on his belt so he pulls it out and points towards the woods. As he looks around, he is startled when the light came upon two yellow eyes. It was an animal. He moves the flashlight to see the size of the animal it was tall and has black fur. He could tell it was a wolf and it was enormous. George sees the wolf takes a step closer out from the trees. George was frightened and he was going to run but decided to say something to the animal. "Hey, there I just want to leave." He backs up slowly in hopes that the animal would not attack. The wolf took another step and he could now see the animal bare its teeth. It was tall almost to his neck and George was six feet four. George decides to turn and run towards his carriage. In one leap the wolf catches him and holds him down with its two front legs. George couldn't move the animal bites George and shakes its head while tearing into George's skin. George passes out and everything becomes dark.

When he awakes, he is confused about where he is? He remembers the wolf jumping on him and biting him. He looks around while lying on his stomach. He tries to move and felt pain on his left side of his body. He manages to turn his head and sees the open wound left by the wolf. He tries to stand up and staggered to his carriage and open the door with his other arm. When he gets to the Doctor’s office, he sent a message to his job and let them know he had been attacked by a dog. He left the hospital two days later and then that night he noticed the change. He started getting hot all over and in a little while runs out into the wildness. It happened only when the full moon was out. George realizes he was now a wolf-like the beast who bit him. George was not like the animal entirely. He didn't want to hurt people. When he encounters a lady and her dog outside, he defies all the animalistic instinct driving him and runs away. He later chased a deer and ate its flesh. He knew his life would have to change. The wolf changed his life and his purpose in his life. For the first time in his life, he felt like he was worried about his future. He needed a place to hide and think. He was an animal and would not be able to control the beast when the full moon was out. He sat down and looks in the bag the only thing his mother left him. Inside the bag, there is a little black book it had a lock on it. He searches the content of the bag for a key. There was a key in one of the deep pockets. He opens the lock and inside were pages there was money attached to each page. He counted the money it was more than one hundred thousand dollars. He looks the book over and on the back cover, there was an arrow pointing up. He felt it must lead to something he pulled back its paper and there was a note. "Dear George, I'm your mother. I could not raise you because of my situation in life. I left this money for you in hopes you can use it to make a life for yourself. I love you just know that." It ended mom. Maybe there was hope for him. The wolf changed him and he had to find a balance where he could live and find some happiness. He knew what he had to do he would have to go out and find a way to live. Included in the box was a small dead to a cabin in the woods he knew well. He packed his things and headed to the place he would build a life for himself. Maybe she loved him after all.
