In the commemoration of International Women's Day in the Year of the Dragon 2024, there is a singular figure whose unyielding fortitude and steadfast resilience continually captivate me: Dr. Juliet Nalwanga. Her extraordinary journey not only exemplifies the potency of the human spirit but also stands as a guiding light of hope for women globally.

Emerging from modest beginnings in a third world country Uganda, Nalwanga encountered adversity from her earliest days. Navigating a patriarchal environment where opportunities for women were scant, she defied societal norms, pursuing her education with unparalleled resolve. Despite encountering myriad hurdles, Nalwanga's pursuit of knowledge remained unrelenting.

A pivotal shift in her journey occurred when she met Prof. Kitya David, a senior neuro surgeon with Mbarara referral and teaching hospital in Western Uganda. It was during her medical training that Nalwanga unearthed her passion for aiding others, committing herself to a life of impactful service.

Upon achieving her medical degree with distinction, Nalwanga confronted a pivotal choice. While many of her peers opted for lucrative careers in urban centres, Nalwanga felt compelled to return to school to pursue neurosurgery and cater to the ever-increasing cases that required attention of specialist doctors in that particular field. Determined to deliver quality healthcare to those in need, Nalwanga even used what would have been personal time to do extra anatomy classes on unclaimed dead bodies just to perfect her skill.

Despite encountering opposition from traditionalists who balked at a woman assuming such a role, Nalwanga persisted, earning the respect and admiration of her community. Nalwanaga has not only become a successful neurosurgeon but also become a big inspiration to the upcoming female neurosurgeons in the country and Africa at large.

Yet, Nalwanga's path was strewn with challenges. In addition to contending with systemic issues such as poverty and resource scarcity, she endured personal tragedies that would have shattered the resolve of a lesser individual. Nevertheless, in the face of adversity, she remained resolute in her dedication to her cause, drawing strength from the unwavering support from her new found passion.

As news of Nalwanga's altruistic endeavours spread, her influence has transcended the confines of her country. She emerged as a beacon of hope and inspiration for women throughout Africa, demonstrating that with determination and resilience, the impossible becomes achievable. Her narrative garnered global attention, earning her accolades and acclaim from prominent figures in the country.

Today, Dr. Juliet Nalwanga continues to galvanize countless individuals with her unwavering commitment to serving others. Despite the obstacles she has encountered and the odds stacked against her, she remains an embodiment of perseverance and resilience. Her journey serves as a poignant reminder that no aspiration is beyond reach, no impediment insurmountable, for those who possess unwavering self-belief and refuse to surrender.

As we celebrate International Women's Day in the Year of the Dragon 2024, let us pay tribute to the remarkable achievements of trailblazers like Dr. Juliet Nalwanga, who have charted a course of resilience and empowerment for future generations. May her narrative serve as a guiding light of hope for women worldwide, inspiring them to embrace their inner strength and pursue their aspirations with unwavering determination.
