Every single one of us needs encouragement regularly. One of the greatest things that we can do in life is to add value to everyone we meet. Habit is formed through repetition, so focusing on doing this is key to succeeding in life.

Why do you want to add value to others?

  1. You get fulfilment and purpose in helping others.
  2. You unlock your full potential when you serve others.
  3. You will not only find wealth, success and happiness, but you will thrive in life.

If adding value to others is something that you are passionate to pursue, be creative and find ways for you to do so. You can put sticky notes on your desk, write them down in your notebook and think about it when you are sitting down and reflecting.

Examples of real-life people

  • Jeff Bezos: He wanted to make buying books online easier in the 90’s so he created Amazon. He added value to people to make their lives more convenient. Today he is the richest man with $177 billion in net worth.
  • Elon Musk: He wanted to ease the payment system so he created Paypal. He later went on to be the founder of Tesla an electric car company. Musk wanted to revolutionise and add value to humanity. His efforts have paid off with the growth in the valuation of his company.
  • Kevin David: A regular person that added value to others by providing free content on selling through Amazon FBA. Today he is is a millionaire and has a successful empire. He started just like a regular person working a 9–5 job.
  • Stephen James: A guy that used to be broke, jobless and living off his friend's place is now a successful entrepreneur and mentor. He adds value to others through the free content that he shares on his website called Project Live Mastery and through his Youtube channel. He provides free advice on how to escape the poverty trap and ways to build wealth for his audience.

The common theme here is that these people started off by giving something for nothing. They gave, gave and gave with no reward in sight. Over time their efforts compounded and paid off and people took notice of the value that they provided to the community.

At the end of the day, they were rewarded for their efforts. It would have most likely been a challenging and difficult road for them when they started off, just like you and me. But their tenacity and vision compounded with their relentless pursuit made all the difference.

Some may say these are not regular people, they are people that are super driven and motivated. And you may be right, they do have attributes that set them apart from the average person, but they started just like you and me, they started out the same, working a job, answering to a boss and living a regular life. However, they choose to be different, they choose to add value to others and make a difference.

For most people, it's easier to seek a comfortable life, to have an easy life, to not put in the extra effort. After all, why do the extra mile at work, or serve the community when there is nothing in it for you, no one wants to do that? Hence, most people choose the comfortable road, even if it means settling for less.

Outcomes of adding value to others

Focusing on adding value to others is good because:

  1. It takes our mind off ourselves and self-centeredness.
  2. Makes you a better leader and person.
  3. Paying it forward, ultimately you reap the rewards.

There is this famous quote originally taken from the Bible and made popular in most contemporary day quotes:

We reap what we sow.

If we sow joy we will reap joy.

If we sow encouragement we will reap encouragement.

If we sow bitterness, we will reap bitterness.

That is true to life isn’t it, how we treat others is how they will respond and treat us.

How do we add value?

There are so many ways that we can add value to other people. It isn't just the big things that we can do but also the small things that compound and grow over time.

Some of the ways we can add value are to:

  • Be encouraging to the people that you meet and work with.
  • Be the hardest worker in the room.
  • Go the extra mile to help a friend in need.
  • Serve the community through the soup kitchen or volunteering for the shelter homes.
  • Donate your things to others in need.
  • Create free content such as books, videos, podcasts to educate and share your experiences with others.
  • Give free items away to other people.
  • Lend a hand to those who you know need it knowing well that they might not be in a position to ever repay you.
  • Be the best spouse, parent, sibling, child, friend, colleague, worker that you can be.
  • Have a good attitude even when things don’t go your way.
  • Give free knowledge to other people through your blogs, Youtube channel and podcasts.
  • Give it you're all in everything that you do.
  • The person that we strive to be everyday is the person that we truly are.

There is this famous saying:

“ If you help other people get what they want, you will get everything you need in life.”- Zig Ziglar

Conclusion

The happiest people are not people that have everything in life, they make the best out of every situation which ultimately lets them live their most fulfilled life. That’s the best way to live!
