honesty: the crown of love

crown of love

By mohamed saadPublished 3 months ago 6 min read

Kamal was an elderly man who lived alone.

His children had grown up, gotten married, and moved away to different places, following the paths that their careers and responsibilities had laid before them.

The house that had once been filled with laughter, conversations, and daily activity had become quiet.

Yet despite his loneliness, Kamal's heart remained full of love for kindness and good deeds.

Helping others had always been one of the greatest joys of his life.

But age had changed many things.

His body was no longer as strong as it once had been.

The years had slowed his steps, and traveling from place to place had become difficult.

Still, his desire to do good never faded.

Each day he found himself wondering:

"How can I continue helping others when I no longer have the strength to go where they are?"

He searched patiently for an answer.

With the calmness of old age and the wisdom gained through a lifetime of experience, he reflected on every possibility.

He did not seek praise.

He did not seek recognition.

He did not hope for people to speak well of him.

His only wish was to continue doing good for one simple reason:

To earn the pleasure of the Lord of Heaven.

And so, quietly and thoughtfully, Kamal began searching for a new way to serve others—one that did not depend on the strength of his body, but on the goodness that still lived within his heart.

One evening, as Kamal sat on the small porch of his house enjoying the cool night air, he noticed a young boy standing alone at the end of the street.

The child was crying.

Not the ordinary tears of a child who had lost a toy or fallen while playing.

These were tears of fear.

Tears of someone carrying a burden far too heavy for his young heart.

Kamal called to him gently.

At first, the boy hesitated.

He looked around nervously, as if he feared someone might be watching him.

Then, little by little, he walked toward the old man.

Kamal invited him to sit beside him and handed him a glass of water.

The boy's hands trembled as he accepted it.

Without asking questions, Kamal placed a comforting hand on his shoulder and gently wiped away his tears.

For several minutes, neither of them spoke.

Slowly, the boy's breathing became calmer.

The fear in his eyes began to soften.

Only then did Kamal quietly ask:

"What happened, my son?"

The boy lowered his head.

For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.

Then the words finally came.

Earlier that day, he had witnessed a theft.

He had seen the thief clearly.

Unfortunately, the thief had seen him as well.

And now the man knew that the boy could identify him.

The thief had approached him later and delivered a frightening warning.

"If you tell anyone what you saw," he said, "you will regret it."

Since then, the boy had been terrified.

He did not know what to do.

If he remained silent, he would feel guilty for hiding the truth.

If he spoke, he feared the consequences.

Kamal listened carefully.

His heart ached for the child.

The old man was no longer strong enough for confrontations.

He could not simply march into danger and challenge a criminal.

Yet neither could he allow the boy to carry this burden alone.

That night, long after the child had gone home, Kamal remained awake.

Sleep refused to come.

His mind wrestled with a difficult question.

How could he teach the boy to be honest?

How could he protect him from fear?

And most importantly, how could he help him tell the truth without placing his young life in danger?

As the hours passed, Kamal sat quietly in the darkness, searching for an answer.

For he knew that honesty was precious.

But he also knew that courage should never mean abandoning wisdom.

The following morning, Kamal asked the boy to come and see him again.

The child arrived looking just as worried as he had the night before.

Kamal smiled reassuringly and invited him to sit down.

Then he leaned closer and said quietly:

"If the thief approaches you again, tell him something very simple."

The boy listened carefully.

"Tell him that the street is full of security cameras."

The boy's eyes widened.

Kamal continued:

"Tell him that the cameras surely recorded everything that happened. Tell him that whether anyone speaks or remains silent, the truth has already been captured."

For the first time since their conversation had begun, the boy smiled.

He understood.

The plan would not require him to lie.

Nor would it force him into a dangerous confrontation.

A few days later, the thief crossed paths with the boy once again.

The moment he saw him, he repeated his threats.

But this time, the child stood a little taller.

With surprising calmness, he replied:

"You don't need to worry about me."

The thief frowned.

"What do you mean?"

The boy answered:

"The entire street is covered with cameras. They must have recorded everything."

The man's expression changed immediately.

A look of uncertainty appeared on his face.

Until that moment, he had focused all his attention on the child.

Now a new fear entered his mind.

What if the boy was right?

What if evidence already existed?

What if the authorities were only a matter of time away?

Suddenly, threatening the child no longer seemed useful.

Whether the boy spoke or remained silent, the possibility of proof was still there.

The thief walked away troubled and confused.

And from that day forward, he left the boy alone.

When the child later returned to Kamal and told him what had happened, the old man felt a deep sense of relief.

He had managed to protect the boy without teaching him dishonesty.

More importantly, he had shown him an important lesson:

Honesty does not mean acting recklessly.

True honesty walks hand in hand with wisdom.

And sometimes, the best way to defend the truth is not through strength, but through intelligence and good judgment.

The boy grew deeply attached to Kamal.

After all, the old man had rescued him from a frightening situation that could have ended very differently.

Before meeting Kamal, the boy had been on the verge of telling his family everything.

Had he done so, his relatives would almost certainly have gathered together to confront the thief themselves.

And no one could predict how the criminal might have reacted.

He might have harmed the boy.

He might have injured a member of his family.

What began as an attempt to seek justice could easily have turned into a tragedy.

Instead, the situation ended peacefully.

The danger passed.

And the boy never forgot who had helped him through it.

From that day forward, he began spending more time with Kamal.

Little by little, a special friendship developed between them.

Whenever the boy faced a problem, he would go to the old man for advice.

And Kamal always listened patiently.

One afternoon, while they were sitting together, the boy began sharing another concern.

This time, it was not about fear or danger.

It was about school.

"I study hard," the boy admitted, "but I forget what I learn very quickly."

His voice was filled with frustration.

"My family thinks I'm stupid."

Kamal immediately placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder.

"No, my son," he said gently. "Forgetting something does not make you stupid."

The boy looked at him hopefully.

"The solution may be simpler than you think."

"What is it?" the boy asked.

Kamal smiled.

"Connect everything you learn to something you love."

The boy frowned in confusion.

"I don't understand."

"Tell me first," Kamal replied, "what are the things you love most?"

The boy began thinking.

Then, one by one, he started naming them.

His favorite football team.

His bicycle.

His friends.

His favorite foods.

The games he enjoyed.

The places he loved to visit.

As Kamal listened, a smile appeared on his face.

The lesson he wanted to teach was already beginning.

Because knowledge becomes easier to remember when it is connected to something that already has a place in the heart.
