Humility - freedom from pride or arrogance: the quality or state of being humble.

We live in a fast-paced world geared towards our every will and need. We expect everything to happen immediately at the push of a button on a keyboard or a cellphone.

Instant gratification has become the new normal for most people who live in urban areas. We can order take out every night if we want, and it only takes a few seconds because our electronic devices are always logged online. As a human race, we have become lazy and insular.

How often do we stop and think about other people before our own needs?

If we think back 30 years, the internet was still in its early days, and so were PC's and cellphones. They were a luxury to have in the home, and none came with the nice big touch screens that we have today. Life was way slower back then.

I remember seeing cellphones that looked like a brick they use in construction work. They came with a clunky antenna that stuck out awkwardly like a designer fault.

Within a few short years our technology advanced completely, and the human race changed with every new gadget. We got the internet in our homes with flip phones, and then the smart phone, which brought endless benefits.

I'm not a Luddite. I embraced the changes, and I love my computer and cell phone. They have helped my life as a writer and a mom. I can reach my friends with my fingertips, and my social life is better for it.

In all these technology advancements, I cannot help but wonder whether we are living our best version of ourselves. Whether we live our full potentials.

Have we lost our humility as a human race?

There are four levels of humility.

1. The people who only think about themselves. Those who want the spotlight and fame - no matter what the cost. (I can name a few here)

2. There are those who want the limelight, but they feel they are happy sitting and wait for their moment of glory. They know it will happen because they deserve it.

3. There are those people who don't seek the limelight and strive every day to become rich and live their dreams. They believe that good things will come if they work hard enough.

Notice how I use the words they and themselves in every sentence? What about other people in this world? Those people who are suffering and those who live in fear of persecution? Those who live in constant fear of being killed in war zones. The homeless and the poor? Trauma survivors?

Do we ever think about others before ourselves?

This brings me on to the final level of humility:

4. Those people who put their own lives before themselves. Our soldiers (Army, Navy, Air force, coast guard) make the ultimate sacrifice and fight in war zones. Our emergency services: police, firefighters, doctors and nurses who work tirelessly to help those in need. Those heroes who work in homeless shelters help the poor who have nothing. Anyone who has dedicated their lives to serving and help others in need.

Where do you see yourself?

Do you help people that need you?

Do you have the kind of humility that makes you think of others before yourself?

As a trauma survivor, I believe that life is for living fully and not just exist to work at someone else's drumbeat. We are social creatures, and we depend on one another, but no one should feel stifled to live fully. Money is not everything. Life can be beautiful if you stop long enough to see what is there.
