Nursing is a noble profession that requires dedication, passion, and skill.

But let's be real - it can also be incredibly taxing, both physically and emotionally. I know this for a fact because I've been a nurse over twenty years now. But perhaps you've been a nurse for years and you're ready for a change.

If you're considering an unconventional route, like ghostwriting, here are 6 realistic goals you can set to make a smooth transition.

1. Acquire relevant writing skills

Before you embark on your ghostwriting journey, it's essential to acquire adequate writing skills.

This means being able to tell stories, write compelling content, and have flawless grammar. If you're not confident enough in your writing, you can enroll in writing courses or workshops to improve your skills.

As nurses, we already have a jump on the pack because we can communicate complex medical information subtly and effectively. With the right training, you can take this a step further and become a successful ghostwriter.

2. Build a professional portfolio

You need to show prospective clients that you have the experience and writing skills that they require.

And believe it or not, nursing actually gives you a good foundation to work with. You can use your past experiences as a nurse to showcase your story-telling ability and communication prowess.

Start building your professional portfolio by finding writing opportunities in blogs, magazines, and websites. Guest posting on blogs or websites that are relevant to your writing niche is an excellent place to start.

3. Establish a professional online presence

In today's digital era, having an online presence is crucial in establishing your writing career.

And yes, I'm totally going to tell you to embrace the social channels that other folks say to turn off. Channels like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Plus, creating a website, setting up social media accounts, and having an up-to-date LinkedIn profile can help you establish your writing brand online.

These can be powerful tool to showcase your portfolio and market your services to potential clients.

4. Network with industry professionals

Networking is an essential aspect of any career, including writing.

In the same way we hang out at nursing conferences, go to courses together and simply hang out, writers do the same.

Establishing relationships with editors, publishers, and other writers will help you stay relevant and plugged into the industry. Attend writers’ conferences or join writing groups and forums to stay connected and up-to-date.

5. Secure ghostwriting projects

Once you've built a solid portfolio and established an online presence, you can start marketing yourself as a ghostwriter.

Attend writer's conferences or cold pitch to clients who need a ghostwriter. You can also sign up for ghostwriting job boards, such as Upwork or Freelancer, to find projects.

In my experience, the best place to find work is through your network.

6. Transition to full-time ghostwriting

Once you have enough ghostwriting projects under your belt, you can start thinking about transitioning from nursing to full-time ghostwriting.

Think about it in these terms. When you became a nurse, the process took at least two to four years. It might take some time, but with hard work and dedication, you can make this career shift a legit reality.

The final word

Becoming a ghostwriter can be a fulfilling and profitable career path that allows you to use your writing abilities and creative instincts.

However, it requires planning and dedication to make it happen successfully. By setting and achieving these realistic goals, you will be well on your way to breaking free from the nursing mold and pursuing your passion for writing.
