Authenticity Starts Within
The 12 Silent Behaviors That Prove You Need to Love Yourself More
Loving yourself is the noblest quality a person can possess. Only those who love themselves can truly love others. After all, how can someone who doesn't love themselves love anyone else? Furthermore, only those who love themselves can be loved by others; it is only when you learn to love yourself first that others will love you.
When you learn to love yourself, all good things begin.
Many people claim they "love themselves" or feel they already do so deeply. But are you truly practicing self-love? Is your way of loving yourself healthy or misguided?
The following 12 signs indicate whether you truly love yourself. If you exhibit these behaviors, it proves you haven't fully mastered the lesson of self-love and need to continue your efforts.
Let's take a look.
1. You judge others
"Life is a mirror; it reflects your thoughts back to you." — Ernest
Remember, every time you vehemently criticize someone—whether behind their back or to their face—you are facing a reflection of yourself. Take back those harsh words, because what you just said is exactly what you need to hear to heal, accept, and improve yourself.
Using harsh words to criticize others clearly indicates that you don't accept your inner self; you are too hard on yourself and lack self-acceptance. When we judge others, we not only reveal our own ignorance, but we also unknowingly hurt them by viewing them solely through our own worldview.
2. You seek approval from others
When we feel empty or have lost something, we look for attention and approval from the outside world. This void needs filling. However, because we lack the right tools and self-reflection to understand the root cause, we desperately chase external validation.
Remember, you are both the cause and the cure. What you are seeking already exists within you. You already know the answer because you are the one who asked the question. Measure yourself by your own standards, and set those standards high—because you deserve it.
3. You put yourself last
Doing things for others can bring us joy and satisfaction, but everyone has an innate need for self-preservation that cannot be ignored. When we become overly engrossed in dedicating our time and energy to others, we may think our extreme selflessness is harmless. But remember: just as a car cannot run without fuel, we must refuel ourselves before we can continue our journey.
4. You repeat things you don't enjoy
Whether it is a job, a lifestyle, or a relationship, continuously operating within an energy cycle that does not serve your higher self is unhealthy. It can easily lead to psychological and emotional struggles, such as anxiety and depression. If you find yourself trapped on a hamster wheel, it is time to get off. It won't do you any good now or later. Trust that something better awaits you around the next corner, and it will eventually find you.
5. You get angry often
"Anger is a sign that something needs to change." — Mark Epstein
What is anger? Where does it come from? Why does it make us emotionally charged and cause our veins to bulge? When facing yourself, anger can knock on your door for various reasons. It indicates that you are deeply unsatisfied with your current situation, whether emotionally or psychologically. Frankly, your basic needs are not being met, and your ego is making it crystal clear that you need to start taking better care of yourself.
6. You allow too much outside feedback to dictate your life
"Before the world tells you who you should be, do you remember who you are?" — Daniel Labbert
Whether it is our parents, friends, colleagues, or bosses, we are always receiving advice or counsel. The key is to entertain an idea without necessarily accepting it. Be aware of which comments resonate with the real you—the inner child who still embraces hope and dreams. Pay close attention to what you allow to influence your choices, because this is your life, and you are the only one living it.
7. You tell white lies
Even harmless little lies reflect a lack of self-confidence. Never belittle your true self just to impress others. Be yourself, be authentic, and know that you are enough. People who do not respect the real you do not deserve your time.
8. You often hide your emotions
When I was younger, I always thought feelings and emotions were separate. I understood that because life presents confusion and difficulties, my emotions would change based on temporary events—whether I was hurt, wronged, or physically exhausted.
My feelings, however, were different. Feelings gave me a clear, inner understanding of who I truly was. They told me what I should do and acted as my guide during the darkest times.
However, I often see people who cannot distinguish between the two. They choose to hide everything they feel because they cannot comprehend it, or because they fear others will discover what is hidden in the secret closet of their hearts. To drown out these feelings, people turn to alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, and other distractions to wash away their intuition. Sadly, when we choose to numb the bad things, we also numb the good things.
9. You can't reconcile the good and the bad
When we fail to process the past emotionally, psychologically, and spiritually, we begin to feel like we cannot bear anything worse. We think, "If one more thing happens, I can't handle it." We are born seeking only the joyful aspects of life while denying our responsibilities. But everything we avoid will eventually find its way back to us.
Whenever we are ready to stop running and surrender to our pain, we release its constraints and control over us. Only then are we ready to take responsibility for our lives again. Clear your mind, and remember: the true purpose of suffering is to awaken the soul.
10. You are too harsh on yourself
I personally believe that self-acceptance and humility go hand in hand. Life is about learning and growth, not calculating our bad karma. When we can forgive ourselves for the things we didn't know then but know now, we ascend to a state of love, self-acceptance, and emotional freedom. You have carried this burden for too long—it is time to throw it off your shoulders.
11. You don't trust your intuition
We all possess intuition. It is that fleeting thought or inner voice that guides our decision-making process, but choosing whether to listen to it is entirely up to you. Learn to trust your very first instinct.
12. You don't follow your heart
Before your conscious mind even has time to process your emotions, your heart already knows the truth. You will always feel a gentle push—an inner knowing that tells you whether you should or shouldn't stay in a situation.
However, this inner drive is often ignored because emotional triggers hidden in the brain disrupt our thinking and lead us astray. This is why people say we should never rush into hasty decisions. Always give yourself the time to separate your deep, inner feelings from temporary emotions. Once you do, trust your own judgment. Trust your intuition, and believe that in the name of life and love, a solution will always be found.
