Over the years, Hollywood has paid close attention to apocalyptic movies with zombies, monsters, or climate disasters.

The so-called apocalypse has heated the imagination of the producers and, with the help of incredible special effects, the big production companies have created thrillers that make you shiver.

Although the pessimistic scenarios and the horror stories about the end of the world do not seem to be a very relaxing way to spend your free time, many moviegoers appreciate this kind of film production.

Therefore, in this article, we have put together a list of the most interesting, boldest, and darkest 10 apocalyptic movies that are worth seeing once in a lifetime.

Movies simulating the end of the world

Take shelter (2011) - with Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain

Curtis Lafourche lives in a small town in Ohio with his deaf wife and daughter. Curtis begins to have visions of horrible apocalyptic storms, where black rain falls from the sky as oil and deadly cyclones head for the sea. He becomes obsessed with these things and moves further and further away from his wife.

However, Curtis spends more and more time obsessively building storm shelters for an end of the world that no one else believes in.

In his desperate attempt to save his family from a threat he can only see, he looks crazy and ridiculous. The film does not focus on apocalyptic images but on the drama of the characters, who live an incredible fear of the end of the world.

Melancholy (2011) - with Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Rampling, and Kiefer Sutherland

Directed by the famous Lars von Trier, the film is a drama about the life and relationship of two sisters who will be put to the test when a nearby planet threatens to collide with planet Earth. Immediately after the wedding of one of the sisters.

Melancholy is a devastating film about the decline of mental health, the end of the world, and how easily a mood is transmitted from one person to another. Quite depressing, Melancholy will make you not see human nature very well in times of crisis.

Eli's Book (2010) - with Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, and Mila Kunis

In a post-apocalyptic America, where once idyllic areas have become desolate and violent territories, a man is fighting to protect the Book and a sacred tomb that could hold the key to the survival of the human race! The primary tyrant of a small town plans to take possession of the book.

Natural disaster movies

The Road (2009) - with Viggo Mortensen

Based on the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, the film takes place in a world that has been devastated by a global cataclysm. A father and his son try to find their way through this deserted place, fighting against cannibals, thieves, and their minds. The two have only one pistol to defend themselves, and they plan to reach the ocean coast, although they have no idea if a better life will await them there.

The Road is one of the darkest apocalyptic films about the evolution of humanity in the wake of such a catastrophic event. This is a movie that doesn't give easy answers and will haunt you for a long time. It's not for everyone's eyes, because it could be one of the worst scenarios for humanity.

Automata (2014) - with Antonio Banderas, Dylan McDermott, and Melanie Griffith

Planet Earth is slowly but surely becoming a desert. The sun's rays kill almost every human being on the planet, and the environment is deteriorating more and more. The last survivors come together and build robots to help humanity.

The first quantum android, Automata Pilgrim 7000 is designed to support society, but it fails to stop rapid climate change. The main characters soon begin to believe that robots do not do exactly what they were programmed to do, and gradually discover a much more complex and profound truth than any robot model. Automata is a film that seeks to draw attention to both the devastating climate change on planet Earth, but also tries to explore the complications and potential dangers created by the combination of human and artificial intelligence.

Apocalyptic zombie movies

Day Z: The Apocalypse (2013) - with Brad Pitt

One day, Gerry Lane, a former UN investigator looking for information that could stop the spread of zombies and the fall of nations, is stuck in a traffic jam with his family.

Even if everything seems normal, at some point something happens and people start attacking each other fiercely. It is believed that a lethal virus that spreads with a bite turns healthy people into wild creatures.

The origins of the virus are unknown, and as the number of infected people grows alarmingly every day, Lane is forced to launch a global investigation looking for the source of the epidemic, as well as the means to stop its spread.

Apocalyptic movies 2019

IO - with Margaret Qualley, Anthony Mackie, and Danny Huston

The Earth's atmosphere has become toxic and all humans have fled the planet to live in a space station near IO, a satellite of Jupiter. Sam is a girl who lives at a high altitude, where the air is still breathable, trying to raise bees that can survive in the atmosphere.

One day, a man arrives at her house to talk to Sam's father, who urged mankind to stay on earth because he still had hope for the fate of the planet. When Sam reveals that her father is dead, Micah is determined to take the last ship to the planet with him. But before leaving, they discover that a new queen bee has come out of the hive and she is immune to toxic air.

Deafening silence - with Stanley Tucci and Kiernan Shipka

Based on Tim Lebbon's novel of the same name, Deafening Silence is a thriller about terrifying creatures and apocalyptic scenarios. With the world under siege by killer creatures that hunt for sound, a teenage girl and her family seek refuge outside the city and encounter a mysterious sect.

2012 - The End of the World (2009) - with John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor

In 2012, the Earth began to have cracks in the Los Angeles area, and natural disasters are progressing faster than anyone would have anticipated.

Jackson Curtis, a writer of SF novels, learns that the earth's crust will be destroyed by solar flares, and it seems that the Mayan prophecy that the end of the world will end on December 21, 2012, is proving to be true.

Therefore, Jackson is trying his best to save his family and make sure that humanity is not wiped off the face of the earth.

Apocalyptic Movies 2020

No apocalyptic films were released in 2020, but there were film productions that were screened in 2020. Here is one of them:

Prisoner of Time (2014) - starring Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt

Every time he dies on the battlefield, he wakes up to relive the day, with all the memories of his previous incarnations still intact. With the help of Officer Rita Vrataski, he becomes more and more experienced and is getting closer to defeating the aliens.
