'El Bar' (2017)
Hey, a little respect.We’re all human beings here.We have to stick together and stay calm. El Bar pretends to be a thriller comedy, but falls short on both levels. The film leans rather towards the comedy genre. But in terms of thriller, it’s a bit too weak. What’s actually the ultimate cause of the incident witnessed by a number of persons isn’t really clear in the end. Are they witnessing a terrorist attack? Or is it the umpteenth viral outbreak? Or are we going back on a zombie tour? If the latter were the case, the film would fit more into the horror genre. It’s not clearly explained. But I think it’s a combination of these assumptions. When you look at the opening sequence, full of microscopic viruses and other whimsical creatures from the microbial world, you are already assuming that some pandemic will break out. But again, it isn’t really clear.

Movie Review: 'Brightburn' Fails to Fire Up Scares
Brightburn ruined my day. I was in a good mood before I saw this nasty, brutal, B-movie. What if Superman were evil, and Ma and Pa Kent were morons; that's the premise of Brightburn. Take the paragon of virtue, Superman, and make him a figure of ugly malevolence. Subversion is a perfectly suitable goal, but you’d better have a good point to said subversion, be it merely an interesting thinkpiece or an alt-world comic book. Unfortunately, all Brightburn has is a premise, and a taste for blood.

Reed Alexander's Horror Review of 'The Color Out of Space' (2010)
AKA 'The title soon to be added to horror movies ruined by Nicolas Cage' The Color Out Of Space (2019/2020). This story by H. P. Lovecraft has had dozens of cinematic adaptations, all of which did things right and things wrong. Colour From The Dark (2008) was the first movie I ever reviewed, and is the reason my blog went from politics to horror reviews. The review took up maybe six lines, but got triple the hits of any of my long winded political opinions, and the rest is history.

Comparison: 'Cell' vs. 'Zombieland'
Unconventional genre Zombieland is a comedy. It sort of misses the point of the original zombie film genre (our world and civilisation could crumble with a bite or two). But it's a whole-lot of friggin' fun (dah—there's a Bill Murry cameo!), and it does touch on consumerism as a pattern of bad behaviour... so, yeah—in a roundabout way—there's something political or semi-philosophical in this comical rendering of the original chomp film genre.

Leering and sweaty, Room 37 The Mysterious Death of Johnny Thunders opts for ugly, unfounded speculation over anything remotely accurate about what may have happened to the mercurial rock star.
