fiction
Horror fiction that delivers on its promise to scare, startle, frighten and unsettle. These stories are fake, but the shivers down your spine won't be.
Site-17: The Beginning Verse Pt. 1
You know those stories your friends and you tell around camp fires? Or the scary tales of creatures going bump in the night? Creatures under your bed or in your closet ready to pounce at any moment and the feeling of fright washes over you as you run and hide from the worst. Well I hate to break it to you, but it's true, Boogeymen do exist just not in the forms you think they exist in. Contrary to popular belief these things don't always hide. Sometimes they are in plain site, watching and waiting. Sometimes you cant see them and at other times you interact with them on the daily bases.

Hero
It was a cold December night. The moon hung in the sky, bloated and red like a blood-filled burlap sack, barely visible between the oppressive clouds. Down below, the mournful wail of police sirens split the air, muted by the otherwise still silence of winter. Through the mist, red and blue lights flashed to the chorus of lamentation that rose in a crescendo of surprise, fear, and disbelief. A thick blanket of snow covered the streets of Chicago’s South Shore, its pristine white surface marred only by the dark red blood pooling around the mutilated and dismembered corpse of a young man. Stepping out of the warmth of his police cruiser, detective Walter Donnavan surveyed the scene unfolding before him. Already a crowd was beginning to form, each straining to get a better view of the body on the other side of the newly formed police perimeter. Seeing this elicited a grim chuckle from the dour police detective. Funny thing what a murder can do to people. He had known this kid, had seen him many times over the years in the precinct for various petty crimes; had arrested him a few times, too. Nobody cared who he was in life, but his death filled them all with a morbid fascination.

The Walkers
I'm sitting on the edge of a cliff. It's a truly beautiful day. The sky is a gorgeous azure blue without a cloud in sight. Below me is a sea of green as far as the eye can see. A true ocean of a forest that seems to go on forever. I hear footsteps behind me but before I have time to see who it is I get kicked off the cliff. I turn as I fall to see my mother's face twisted into an almost inhuman sneer, "Die you filthy beast!" She howls at me as I fall. I turn back around to stare at the forest canopy waiting to catch me. I find myself oddly at peace with this moment.

Deadly Daybreak
Open your eyes, breathe. Don’t breathe; you’re underwater. Look everywhere—below you, to the left, to the right, look up. Swim up? You can’t tell which direction is up because the depth of darkness doesn’t alter. But you seem to be going in the right direction. To be able to breathe.

Darkened Dreams
I sometimes longed for a simpler life. One of which I was a farmer caring for my rows of fruit bearing trees. Rows of trees shuffled for dominance in my mind but I always thought being a farmer was a pipe dream. Then the pandemic hit and my life was turned upside down. I lost my job and couldn't afford the rent for long. I looked at my savings and decided to hell with it, I was going to create the simple life I wanted. Naturally, I cashed in my savings, sold my belongings and bought a small farm in the southwest coroner of Colorado. Moving from California was difficult but the open fields and land was something of my dreams.

The New Idol
It was three days after Jonukan unexpectedly - and somewhat amusingly - ascended to reverence when he noticed something was wrong. He awoke shortly before dawn, a moment of relative peace and quiet, and found it... Wanting. Unrest and impatience bubbled within his chest, anxiety making his heart pound, eyes dilated and breaths coming in short bursts. He knew what was wrong the moment he gained clarity, and growled to himself, knowing that the clarity wouldn't last much longer. Of all the times for him to regress.
