fiction
Horror fiction that delivers on its promise to scare, startle, frighten and unsettle. These stories are fake, but the shivers down your spine won't be.
A Touching Gift
Glen had always been a bit of a ladies' man. Ever since his first girlfriend, he'd been a firm believer in the "love um and leave um" school of thought. In high school, it caused some trouble. Glen was the handsome football player who went through women like water, and it seemed he was always in the middle of some drama. In a way, Glen guessed he fed off it, loving the attention he got from being at the center of such controversy. As he got older, Glen found similar conquests out in the real world. The car lot he worked at held a bevy of pretty clients, pretty secretaries, and lovely bosses who became far less authoritarian once the bedroom door was shut.

The Thin You
Gerald lay on his bed and listened to the hypnosis MP3 on his phone. He was fifty kilograms overweight and desperately wanted to get rid of this disgusting burden, the jokes, and the hurtful teasing in gym class. He tried jogging while listening to audiobooks, but that just made him eat more. Weightlifting was okay but going to the gym every day was tiresome, and most times he couldn't be bothered.

The Rain Man
Her mother told her to lock all the doors, close all the curtains, go to the basement, and stay quiet. Lisa thought it was because of the tornado but her mother was more afraid of the man in the night than any storm. As the rain poured down, the thunder made its big booming presence known. Lisa sat in the small corner of the dimly lit basement mindlessly scrolling through her phone, cursing the god's every time the internet went out; causing her Instagram feed to refresh. About an hour or so later, Lisa got bored, put down her phone picked up her book, and continued reading where she had left off in the storybook oh so long ago. Just as she seemed to be drifting off into the fantasy world of fictional characters and insane missions, she heard the back door open with that familiar "click" of the lock. Slowly, lifting her gaze up and away from the book, she furrowed her brow as her mind processed what she had heard, with a release of breath she hadn't realized she was holding, she called out for her mother but stopped mid-way through as she remembered her mother said to stay quiet and as she listened to the footsteps a sudden and terrifying realization hit her; that wasn't her mother walking and she had just made a noise.

Who's finger is this?
After giving the package a shake, it was clearly larger than it needed to be. I can hear the package’s contents fly around the box in its paper wrapping. The drone that dropped it off was a large one, probably able to lift packages up to 5 pounds. The box is seven inches in all dimensions, and maybe a couple ounces. I am willing to bet that someone in the mail room didn’t even pick the box up before they attached it to a drone for delivery. I grab a razor blade.

The Boogeyman Knocks Under my Bed at Night.
The Boogeyman Knocks Under My Bed At Night I lie awake in my room, barely lit by the moon replica night-light my Aunt Margie bought me for my birthday. The darkness lurks around the light like a creature waiting to feast. It's edges seem to argue with the orange glow of the light over who has reign over this little corner of my room. I shudder at the thought of who might win.

Excerpt
I need to say firstly, that this is just an excerpt from something else I've been fooling around with. By no means is it a complete story. Secondly, it has very little to do with Jim's woods. Especially because this is fiction, where the stories of 'Jim's woods' are autobiographical in nature. I wanted to see what it looks like out here/there and also to see what kind of reaction I get, if any. Thanks for taking a look. James E.B.

Priest Reese: Vampire Hunter
We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cozy A-frame cabin. My German Shepherd Helsing was absently gnawing on something in the passenger seat but I was too busy keeping the truck from sliding off the road to give it much attention. We went left at the fork in the road knowing full well that the cabin was to the right and drove a little ways down so we'd be out of sight. It wasn't until I had stopped at a pass overlooking the cabin that I noticed what Helsing had between his teeth and paws. It was one of my wooden stakes which he loved to whittle down to a nub. He let a low, whimpering growl as I took it away from him.

Kin is Kin
The wind blew through the trees, Jimmy watched as the leaves shimmered in the afternoon light. He stood up, stretching his back, shoveling was not as easy as he thought, he stared into the hole, slowly getting deeper and deeper as his father continued to shovel. He watched the pile of dirt beside the hole get bigger and bigger, so big that the dirt would slide down bit by bit. He looked at his father, smiling, his sweat covered brow in a sullen expression. Jimmy continued to help as best as a five year old could.

Journal of a Mad Writer
Travis pulled up in front of the old cabin, ready to prepare everything for the coming weekend. It would be nice to have the rental property again. It had been closed for the last eight months as the police combed over every square foot for evidence. Travis grimaced as he thought of it, cursing his luck at being out all that cash. He'd had a funny feeling about that writer type, but he'd needed the money. It had been a slow season, and he needed to make it up before the snows came. Who could have known that the snow would come so early that year?

What lies beneath
We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cozy A-frame cabin. I looked into the rear-view mirror as we curved around another corner. Toby was asleep in the back seat. The smile had been glued to his face from the moment we picked him up from school. Katie was sitting beside me, talking non-stop about the latest work drama. I tried to follow along and nod at the right times, but most of my focus was on ensuring we stayed on the road. The cabin had been in the family for generations, it felt like my true home. But I wasn’t exactly familiar with the drive.
