The Fireplace
There’s something living in my fireplace. The ancient thing hasn’t worked since we moved in, and I imagine it’s been decades since a real flame scorched the insides of the cinder block chimney. Although, the blackened space where logs once rested is evidence that it did, indeed, once upon a time burn red and orange. Now, the only signs of life coming from the old fireplace, is an occasional spider emerging from the cobweb laden hearth. That was of course, until I started hearing the noises.

Transit
Jack woke with his face so close to spider web fractured glass that he thought his own pupil had cracked. Even having never ridden in a train before, Jack recognized the large rectangular windows and rows of benches. The benches had a dark and brilliant wood finish, with the backs all ending in a detailed swirl that reminded him of church pews. Running down the center of the aisle was a deep red carpet. It was almost as if it used to be a different color, and the red was just a stain on the fabric. The sight subconsciously tapped into Jack’s deepest memories and caused an involuntary shudder.

The Last Door
One more door. That’s what I keep telling myself. One more door and that’s it for an entire glorious week. One week on the beach with Sarah and the kids. The fact that she invited me on this trip had to be a good sign, right? Maybe me moving back home and getting this stupid job proved to her that I was ready to be the husband and father that she had always wanted me to be. The mere thought of being back with my family made me take the stairs up to the door in twos. Who knows? Maybe I’d even get a sale at this one. I was feeling unstoppable.
