The Voice in the Woods
This happened back in 1996 when I was 9. My paternal grandmother had passed away and the entire family was congregating at my grandparents’ ancestral home to prepare for the funeral. Their house was on the outskirts of a small town, approximately four hours away from where I lived.

Top of the Charts. Runner-Up in The Mystery Box Challenge.
Have you ever looked at the liner notes on a CD? Maybe you were on a road trip, bored of watching endless stretches of farmland roll by your window and you needed something to distract you. Maybe you're one of those rare people who gets curious about who and what goes into making a record and you decided to find out. If either of those apply to you, there's a chance you might have seen my name. You wouldn't remember it, of course. Just a handful of tiny black letters populating one of those overcrowded blocks of text, tucked away in the liner notes of an album. "Blake Mickens: bass guitar on tracks 2, 7, and 12." "Martin Aubuchon: drums and percussion on tracks 3 and 11." "Special thanks to Chloe Hall, Calvin Hawkins, Jorge Dominguez and Sylvia Adzoh." If you pick up the right record, I'm somewhere in there.

10 Horror Series Worth Watching This Halloween
Ordered from least to greatest for your convenience. 1. Hemlock grove This show has a solid first season. It’s a high school teen drama mixed with supernatural elements. It’s not perfect, but the performances are strong and the storytelling is interesting. Season 2 is a miss-step, but watchable. Season 3 is a mess and is unsatisfying as a conclusion, but if you’re bored and want to watch a horror-themed show, this is a unique option. Bill Skarsgård, Landon Liboiron, and Famke Janssen do an excellent job in this forgotten early Netflix series.

Squawking Chimes
I framed Grandma’s picture after she died. It was a small photo, nestled cleanly in a wooden frame I found lying around in my parent’s house back in Abry. It was an old photo, taken back in the forties. She was youthful back then, smiling in her twenties. Grandma had seen everything—the Great Depression, World War II, the Kennedy’s… Trump… COVID—all of it. She even contracted the virus, at 95 years old, and kicked it to the curb with only minimal symptoms. She was a tough lady. She had a good sense of humor, probably because she knew most people were totally crazy; she’d had too much first-hand experience with that shit, throughout the course of her century.

Chucky Review: "He Is Risen Indeed"
Today is a huge day for us Chucky fans: it's the anniversary of the very film that started it all, Child's Play. On November 9, 1988, the original Child's Play film hit theaters, with the cast including Alex Vincent as six-year-old Andy Barclay, Catherine Hicks (later of 7th Heaven fame) as Andy's mother, Karen Barclay, Chris Sarandon as detective Mike Norris, and of course, Brad Dourif as Charles Lee Ray, the infamous Lakeshore Strangler who is gunned down by Mike and transfers his soul into a Good Guy doll, Chucky. 34 years and six sequels later, we have this TV series, more specifically, this very episode, "He Is Risen Indeed."

The First of Many
Never had Dr. Rebecca Werthing thought her life would take this turn. Not in med school or in any of the years at her job. She was now a passenger, forced to watch as some alien thing used her as a meat puppet. Her short cropped black hair framed her face. A face the color of pale desert sand. Which was unlike the rich ochre of her parents, or the pristine ivory of her wife. She never knew a mental projection of herself could become so tired. But she was, after hours of screaming and trying to fight her way out of this mind prison, she was utterly exhausted. After taking a few moments to collect herself she began her analysis of the situation.

Blood Pumpkin
"What in the hell are those?" Clarence had gone to Reggy's Veggies to buy seeds, just as he had every year since Reggy had opened. David Decker probably bought his seeds here, too, Clarence reflected. It was part of the reason Clarence kept coming back. The fact that Reggy was a friend since boyhood and Clarence taking his business to the new feed store up the road would hurt him was secondary.

La Patasola of South American Folklore
"I'm more than the siren I live alone in the world: and no one can resist me because I am the Patasola. On the road, at home, on the mountain and the river, in the air and in the clouds all that exists is mine." — López, Javier Ocampo from Mitos, Leyendas Y Relatos Colombianos
