'Beneath Us' Movie Review
Beneath Us is about a very timely subject: immigration. More specifically, it’s about undocumented immigrants and their inherent struggles. Two brothers, Alejandro (Rigo Sanchez) and Memo (Josue Aguirre), have come to America looking to make some money to support their families back in Mexico. They, along with some other undocumented workers (Roberto “Sanz” Sanchez, Thomas Chavira, Nicholas Gonzalez), are hired by an affluent white couple, Liz and Ben Rhodes (Lynn Collins, James Tupper), to do some work on their house. But Liz and Ben decide to use this opportunity to indulge in their more sadistic tendencies, and they demean and torture the poor workers. Knowing that they can’t contact law enforcement, Alejandro, Memo, and the rest must figure out a way to survive and escape.

Crystal Ball
A group of six teenagers went to the beach on a murky day after it had stormed. There were a few others at this time, as the crisp air made the water chillier than it already would be on a 40-degree day. Aside from the long beach, there was a strip mall of pizza shops, gift shops, restaurants, and stands selling classic summer novelties like popsicles and ice cream cones. It was like a ghost town; the only noise was from the rustling waves that rose higher and higher from the striking breeze. The workers didn’t bother to show up today. The only open place was a tiny shack between two gift shops that gave psychic readings.

The man in red
He came to our town, wrapped in red cloth and smelling of lavender. Atop a black horse he rode in, met with suspicious glares and cold shoulders. The man in red entered that, now, empty town which once prospered in the valley, below a steep cliff face, towering over our small homestead. I can see it now with my waking eyes, the man in red and the nightmare he hosted atop the mountain.

Reap
I turned my attention from the crowds to my brother. Just like all the others his eyes were awash with excitement as he too in the stands and crowds of dancers. He plucked two sticks of some grilled meat from a vendor with a smile and handed one over to me. I bit into it hesitantly, shocked by how flavorful the first bite was. I devoured it quickly, which brought laughter spilling from my brother’s lips. Being dead was not what I had expected or theorized. Everyone seemed so happy, unhindered by the reality that they all were dead. The anger that I felt earlier when I tried to hold onto those shreds of darkness and my worldly life flared through my body again. I gripped hard on the stick I was still holding in my hand, snapping it in half. Nobody seemed to notice or if they did they were just as unbothered by my anger as their current predicament. Even Shaun walked ahead of me, his step light as he led me out of the festival area and down a much quieter side street.

The Philosophy of The Invisible Man
I have a rule about always reading a book before seeing the movie or TV show that it’s based on. If I read it after, I feel like my imagining of the characters is skewed. Also, in my opinion, it’s just more fun to see something come to life after reading it than it is to read something you’ve already seen.
