Fallen Society
The streets, once glowing with life and nearly brimming with people using all methods of transportation, stood empty. The dust and sand typically kicked up by the activity lay still for the first time in years. Stray papers skidded across the ground with the slightest breeze. They had been long abandoned. The once white paper yellowed and creased with age. The edges held small tears, loose fibers balled up and clinging futilely to the rest of the pages.

Mary
Mary was different, special in a way. Nobody knew Mary was real, well, except for me. We moved into this new house in New Orleans and that is when my life changed, forever. I was about sixteen years old and was homeschooled. Most people seem to think this would be a horrible idea, right? Nope, not for me because my parents had me signed up for everything under the sun. It’s because of all these extracurricular activities that I'm able to speak three languages, play the piano, violin, cello, and discovered my love for tennis. I was not some weirdo that never went out and did anything, in fact I did more than most of the other children my age. My mother had always wanted to be "that" mom, the mom that stayed home with her kids, elegantly prepared every meal, cleaned, and maintained her garden. Unfortunately, my mother could not have any more children after me because she had endometriosis and blocked fallopian tubes. Getting me here was extremely difficult, so my parents decided that I was a blessing as it was and enjoyed the family, they were able to have. My dad was in the military for eight years or so, and when he got out, he ended up doing contract work for some multimillionaire. It has not been the toughest life, but it has been remarkably interesting for sure. My dad is a wonderful man that does anything you ask, and he supports my mother to the fullest. Meeting Mary, however, will change everything.

Grandma lost her mind.
Sometimes I wonder if staying up late to watch horror movies is a bad thing. This may sound like a cliché because when I do, I end up having to turn the hall light or bathroom light on, that way I’ll be able to fall asleep. Sometimes nightmares feel really in so many ways. The one thing I hate about nightmares is that when I do wake up in the middle of the night due to a nightmare then fall asleep, instead of going into a different dream, the nightmare just continues where it had left off.

Anne
Joanie lived in a village in the middle of nowhere. It was the sort of village where everyone knew everyone and everyone's business. When she was 11 she was given a watch and a chunky secondhand Nokia with a pay-as-you-go sim. This was the beginning of Joanie's independence. Since Joanie was going to secondary school in the next village over, her mum felt it was important to have a way to contact home if there were any school bus problems and Joanie would need a lift. It was also safer, Joanie's mum said if she wanted to meet a friend after school.

Parasite
With a heavy breath, she exhaled. Laying prostrate in the overgrown grass on her parent's front lawn, an oak tree looming over her with its Spanish moss dripping from its limbs, she closed her eyes and breathed. The sky clouded over to a somber gray and, in a garbled voice, bellowed in discontent. Soon enough, the rain followed suit, and in a codependent venture of melancholy, it stormed. All the while, the girl lay still. With each luke-warm drop of rain, she seemed to melt into the grass, into the dirt. To melt would be a fine thing to do, but she'd settle for the simulation.

The Hunt
I froze; my feet became glued to the frost covered ground. My chest tightened in fear and anxiety. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears; my pulse could be felt in my fingertips. The sound of my blood rushing in my ears drowned out every other sound. It was so loud I could hear nothing else.

Migraines
For as long as I can remember I have had migraines. I wish they were just the sensitive to light and smell kind of migraines; you pop an Excedrin and get on with your life. No, I get the completely debilitating ones. They come with a fever, nausea, and little shadows out of the corners of my eyes.
