Spooky Attractions
Halloween has always been one of my favorite holidays and times of the year. I am still not sure if Christmas beats it… Anyways, there is always something attractive in creeps in the dark, mysteries hidden in the shadows, secrets that may be unveiled. I think it is actually the main thrill and allure of the scare is to decide whether or not we want to know what's hidden, whether or not we want to see it and how far we can go to find out. Like, if you are at the graveyard would you actually want to know that afterlife exists and SEE a ghost? And if you do, then what?

As It Is In Hell
What is it about the supernatural that intrigues human beings so much? Is it that we struggle to fathom the concept that there's more than the realm we experience? Or is it simply because we're all secretly obsessed with anything considered dark or taboo? I pondered these things on my way home from school yesterday when something told me to take a different route home. I can't say what it was exactly; not a voice, more like...a feeling. Like someone or something had implanted this vague thought into my mind and the next thing I knew, I was turning down a street I had never walked down before. The street was completely empty, which was odd for this part of town that's usually known for children playing in the yards, moms out walking with strollers, and teenagers playing basketball while blaring loud music. No, this street was different. Every house was quiet. Even the light from the setting sun seemed to morph from its once dazzling array of orange and gold to a dull stormy grey. I quickened my pace and kept walking, anxious to make it to the next street to my house. That's when I saw it. I don't know what made me turn and even look in this direction in the first place but there it was between two garbage bins filled with trash that looked and smelled like it had sat there for weeks. It was a book, old and worn. The cover was stained with god knows what and the pages had yellowed with time but there it was. I don't know what drove me to pick it up but the next thing I knew, I was running home with it neatly tucked under my arm as if the world was trying to steal it from me. The relief I felt entering my front door was breathtaking. But relief from what? What was I so anxious for? Why was I so dead set on bringing this book home? I put on a pot of coffee and sat down at the table with my new find. The cover had a strange symbol on the front that looked strangely like a pentagram merged with an upside down cross merged with...a goat head? I instantly knew I should have thrown it away. I was raised catholic after all. But then there was that vague thought in my head again that said..."open it." So I did. I can't even fully explain what happened next but the closest thing I can equate it to was a near death experience. You know how they say right before you die you experience your entire life all over again in the period of like five seconds? Well that's what happened except it wasn't my life I was looking at. I was seeing...people. People in agony. People screaming in torment and pain. But what was truly strange was that in the midst of all that, I felt none of the misery I was seeing around me. I felt like I was literally there next to these people but I was separated at the same time. Protected almost. Once the vision was gone I just sat there for a while trying to catch my breath. Once I could breath normally I decided to start reading. The book was basically an instruction manual for...something that I couldn't quite understand. But at this point I had to try and see what it was. I needed a dark room and candles. I ran to the storage closet and grabbed as many candles as I could find and placed them in a circle. Then I turned off the lights. I immediately felt like there was something else in the room with me but for some reason I didn't fear it. The next step was a passage I had to read aloud. Looking over it I realized it was a prayer...the Lord's Prayer in fact. But it had been altered.

Cursed stone faces
The photo I took a few months ago, of the stone faces outside the church on the way up to my daughter's school, always caught my eye, and creeped me out. I found I always had to look up at them, every time I passed by. They even inspired one of my recent short stories: 'Grotesque.'

Into The Woods
I hope you enjoy this Halloween story. It's going to be a beautiful 31 days of Halloween. Have a safe Halloween. 9:45 PM The road in front of him was illuminated faintly from the eerie glow of the full moon. If it weren't for the moon and his truck's bright lights, he would be plunged into a world of darkness, unable to see clearly. The long stretch of the highway was eerily quiet and there were no other cars or trucks. There usually was. But he was alone.

The forest
Growing up next to a forest will both forever be one of my most cherished and haunting memories. As a kid my brother and I grew up next to a beautiful national park. My parents always warned us to never to go in, under any circumstances. My brother and I used to play on the outskirts of the forest, sometimes we would hear strange noises and see things dashing between the leaves from the corner of our eyes. My brother began to question my parents why they always seemed so scared. They would always simply reply that they just didn’t want us to get lost. My brother and I would play all sorts of games to pass our time. One day we decided to play catch, my brother threw the ball to high and too fast and it went straight into the forest. It was only just inside and I could see the ball from where I was standing. I began walking over to get it but our mother would watch us sometimes from the window and saw me walking towards the forest. I remember her running out and screaming telling me I was to never go into the forest under any circumstances. I was sent to my room and grounded. My mother yelled at my brother too as he was quite older than me and she told him it was his responsibility to watch me. She screamed on about all the things that might have happened to me had she not been watching. At the time I couldn’t understand why it had been such a big deal, I was going to quickly walk in grab the ball and walk out. I wouldn’t have gotten lost as the house was still in sight, my brother was there to watch me. A week passed and my mother finally allowed us to play outside again, however this time she was always watching us play. The ball sat there just outside of our reach, it was our favourite ball to play catch with as it was bright red and had a little drawing of a rocket on the side that my brother and I had done together. As time went on and my brother got older, stronger and more confident he began pushing and breaking the rules my parents had set out. He would joke about going into the forest and proving to my parents that there was no reason for them to be so scared. Until one day I walked into the kitchen to get breakfast and I saw him stuffing his bag full of food and drinks. I asked him if we were going on a play pretend picnic as we had done so many times before. He told me that we weren’t playing picnic today instead he wanted to explore the forest. I knew this time it wasn’t a joke, I began crying and begging him not to go in. My parents were away that day as they had to go to the markets to get food. He sat me down and told me not to cry, he took my favourite bear that I wouldn’t go anywhere without. He told me that he would take my bear to protect him and that way he’d have to make sure he came back. I agreed and watched as my brother walked into the forest. He grabbed our favourite red ball and threw it to me, I asked him to come back after that, but I watched him disappear into the leaves. With nobody to play with to pass the time I bounced the red ball off the house to play catch. My parents arrived home some hours later, was almost sunset. My mother immediately asked where my brother was as I was playing alone. She saw the red ball in my hands and her eyes immediately darted to where the red ball used to lay inside the forest. All I remember was her screams, she ran to the side of the forest and began calling his name. My father ran to her and tried to console her, I knew he had to come back to give me my bear. The search party was called to look for my brother, they never found any sign of him. They said it was like he had vanished, it was all over the news. My brother never brought my bear back, we never got to play catch with our favourite red ball again. Sometimes I think I could see him standing just inside the forest holding my bear, almost as if it was calling for me to enter. I think my parents saw him too one day, however they seemed frightened and shortly afterwards built a fence blocking off the forest. To this day I’ll never know what happened to my brother.

The Crow
It was a balmy, autumn day. The sun shined brightly with little wispy clouds floating by. Colorful leaves played in the light breeze and danced along the ground. They crunched under the man's heavy shoes as he walked towards his parked car. He ignored their brilliant color and the beauty of the day as he hurried to his car with a brief case in one hand and his breakfast in the other. He chomped down on his bagel with cream cheese, quickening his pace as his car came in to view.

The Haunting at Hale's Bar
I love the paranormal and the paranormal loves me. I not only search for spirits but I seem to attract them. My friends request my leadership when they want to experience the paranormal. I have many photos and experiences to share. This particular photo represents a spirit that I saw in an abandoned Hale's Bar Dam Powerhouse. I will write about the photo after I describe the building.
