Pages of Geechee Descent
I peeled the rat-eaten sheets from my clammy skin and tried my best to avoid the bed creaking as I got up, but that was pointless. Everything creaked in this busted-down house, from the rotten floorboards to the walls when the wind blew. I didn’t want to wake my husband, Earl, and I damn sure didn’t want to wake the three little ones we shared our bed with.

Pen-pals
The old wooden door opened with the scraping and creaking that comes with age, from the warping effect of many rainy days followed by warm ones. Its maroon paints flaked and a few pieces fell off as one of the things entered. In one corner of their little room they sat. They knew what it meant if a thing came in: they wanted something. Commotion began in all of the other rooms too, the bleating chatter of a group working out what is going on, or what may be coming. Its footsteps sounded wet, which fitted with the drumming of the rain on the roof, and the small stream being allowed in by the crack in the corrugated panels. Where it fell it made a small path on the soft floor.

Confessions of a Witch's Daughter
Dear diary, mother is at it again! She says this time she was done for real then five days later she returns to him. Nothing gets me more frustrated than being used for her plots of vengeance and solicitation of jealousy. She hasn’t even been back a day and she is already assembling her altar of terror. Last time she assembled the altar we had to destroy two sacred statues that were one of a kind and heirlooms. This time I don’t know what will happen. These altars have one purpose and one purpose only and that is to destroy her enemies. What she seems to forget is that you can’t fight fire with fire. When you mess with the spirit world you have to keep your promises! You have to deliver what you promise once they give you what you summoned them to do.

EVERY NIGHT
Whether I believed in it or not was irrelevant, at that time in my life nothing could have been further from my mind. I awoke every morning with my girlfriend; young and in love, poor, in the big bad world, together. I would make her breakfast and coffee while she showered and dressed for work.

MISDIRECTION
PART 1: SUICIDAL SWEATERS A sense of foreboding filled the room. There were no sounds, other than the leaking tap and the shrill sound of the sirens leaving the apartment block. The four remaining members of the Sweater family sat still in the room, along with their local priest and me. While they prayed silently to their god for the soul of Nero Sweater, I read over the words that were painted black along the lounge room wall once more: I felt that if I could only reach higher, I could touch the stars. This same statement painted nine times in each room of the apartment.

The Curse
When one seeks, one shall find, hmm, an interesting thought to have entered my psyche. I feel the sensation of raindrops touch the cells of my skin; wet, cold, silken, and beautiful. My breath seems to echo in vibration and the beating of my heart is amplified as I slowly become conscious of my surroundings.

Ghosts of days long gone
The crunch of gravel and slamming car doors put Victoria on high alert. 'It should be the second room on the left, Annabelle,' a deep voice boomed. The scuffing of shoes brought her attention to the door, where a young girl ran into the room carrying a large box. Unceremoniously dumping it on the floor, Annabelle looked around and sniffed, displeased with the dated appearance of the room. Victoria gasped as Annabelle viciously pulled a large sheet of wallpaper off the wall, letting it fall in a crumpled pile on the floor, sending up clouds of dust. Victoria glared at the girl, her eyes turning icy… and the temperature of the room plummeted. She had only just arrived, and she was already destroying things… as expected. Annabelle shouted, "Mum fix the thermostat! It's freezing up here!". Rolling her eyes, Victoria turned, and with a swish of her long skirts, strode past the girl towards the hall, slamming the door behind her. She heard a yelp of fright and took pleasure at the thought of the girl's horrified face when the door appeared to shut of its own accord.

Don't trust the shadows
There had been over two dozen sightings by late April. A tall, dark figure, just outside the corner of one's eye. The mere presence of a shadow. Reporters had mocked. The police had laughed. Those who claim they saw someone- something- were ridiculed and shunned. But everyone began to believe after the first body showed up.

A Very Simple Man
A Very Simple Man By: Shawna Bennett Jack could feel his lungs begin to burn and his calf muscles were already cramping. He had gone out last night and stayed out a little to late. He blamed the sexy blonde who had captured his attention. He was a young stockbroker and prided himself on appearances. He wore well-tailored suits and kept his physical appearance well-toned. He didn’t jog every morning for pleasure, but because it was a requirement of the image he wanted to maintain. The blonde had been a pleasant distraction last night, but he regretted it this morning.

The clicking in the mirrors
From the beginning, they had warned her. In one of her earlier trips to the town, she had introduced herself, and shared her plans for the renovation of the mansion. The townsfolk had muttered to each other, shooting her worried looks. She had laughed, brushing away their concerns, summing it up to resisting change. she was not laughing now.

Slender
Today I wake up in the middle of the night, sweat beading down my forehead, my body shaking. I was unable to recall what happened inside my dreams, but it wasn't pleasant. Slowly, I get up off the couch where I had fallen asleep and move into the quaint apartment kitchen. I pour a bowl of corn flakes and eat it dry, washing the last of it down with milk straight from the jug. I make my way to my room and change my clothes into ones that weren't damp with sweat, then, I go back to the couch and get comfortable again. Suddenly, my phone rings and I jump about five feet in the air and carefully pick up my ringing phone, then slide and wait for the familiar voice to come over the receiver. The voice I used to hear clearly everyday, but it doesn't come. It will never come again because she was gone. A heavy breathing comes through instead and then words muffled through hissing.
