Slender
Today I wake up in the middle of the night, sweat beading down my forehead, my body shaking. I was unable to recall what happened inside my dreams, but it wasn't pleasant. Slowly, I get up off the couch where I had fallen asleep and move into the quaint apartment kitchen. I pour a bowl of corn flakes and eat it dry, washing the last of it down with milk straight from the jug. I make my way to my room and change my clothes into ones that weren't damp with sweat, then, I go back to the couch and get comfortable again. Suddenly, my phone rings and I jump about five feet in the air and carefully pick up my ringing phone, then slide and wait for the familiar voice to come over the receiver. The voice I used to hear clearly everyday, but it doesn't come. It will never come again because she was gone. A heavy breathing comes through instead and then words muffled through hissing.

Prom Queens
High School Hallway ALEX: *gestures to Emily* Can you believe that he actually dates that chick? SHAWN: Nah, man. I don't know why he hasn't gotten rid of her yet; it was just supposed to be a fling and it's been a year. Like, what does he even see in her?

Property of the Shadow Reaper
Monday, 7:00 a.m.: The University Campus The cool of the morning chills me to my bones as I step out the door of my flat. My breath turns into crystalized clouds. I clench my coat tight to my breast and head off to class. The sun is just barely starting to rise, peeking its head over the tip of the tree line, not yet kissing the snowy campus below. A thin fog lingers at my feet. It's not unusual for mornings to feel uneasy, but today feels particularly disconcerting.

Roots
I have always been proud of where I come from. Just a small rural town close to northern Ohio Appalachia with big rolling fields and the smell of fresh cut hay, the seasonal whiff of manure. There's always a hum of tractors and talk of big machinery, livestock, and crops.
