Deal Me Love
What if the people of the world had a set ending and beginning? What if that ending was love, the beginning, death. What if it was simply made a possibility? The people are dealt the cards at the beginning of their life, by the hands of fate or the creatures in the shadows, nobody can really tell the difference at this point; but everything in their life is calculated to the tiniest bit of chance. Of course, they are unaware of the reality in which they live. It is a behind the seams story. One of cause and one of effect.

As I reflect on those winters growing up in Roanoke, Minnesota in the eighties, I feel an icy chill on the back of my neck. This story was to remain forgotten not because so many years have passed but because the horror of events that unfolded on Christmas Eve in 1982 was what some would call the ruin of Roanoke and its people, except for one. I am the sole survivor of that night, known as the Scissor Claus Massacre.

My head snaps back as he grabs onto my hair with one hand and squeezes my waist with the other. The wind covers our final moans like a blanket would cover a scared child. The skin of my hands press further and tighter against the peeled paint of the barn, forgetting the chance of a splinter and living in the moment of ecstasy. Xavier’s head rests against my exposed back once he finishes entirely, and I can feel his hot breath send relaxing shivers up my spine. The feeling is short though, because before we can relish in the exhaustion for too long he is putting his clothes back on. My hands pull away from the barn and I feel the cold beginning to travel through the hairs on my arms, sinking into the flesh that was hot and sweaty moments ago.

The sky was filled with a blanket of stars that stretched to infinity. The silvery moon peeked out from the grey clouds and the crystal clear lake mirrored the moon which shone like a mid-tone gray medallion. Sandra, Carla, Tulip, Penny and I were taking a stroll down the street. We were chatting about our school stuffs and other things as well. Suddenly, to change the topic Carla commenced to tell some funny jokes. We all the time or sometimes liked to call Carla 'The Queen of Jokes' because among all of us she had the very most sense of humor. With a start, our gales of laughter came to an abrupt halt when we came across the abandoned mansion which lied deserted in the middle of the street. A shiver of apprehension ran down our spines at the very first sight of it. Some foxes were seen creeping out from the back of the building. They had sharp teeth and was drooling too. All of our faces became a mask of terror when we were spotted by those horrifyingly creatures.

The sun was down for nearly two hours when I came upon a gas station. The highway had been long and bare, so the station’s lighting was much more jarring than usual. Parking, I read the paper given to me, containing the details of the bed & breakfast, as well as their directions which I only then realized were too vague. My exhaustion and impatience got the better of me, and despite the late hour, I called the number.

“Who weeps for the Devil?” So the way I see it Satan gets a bad rap. I’m not saying the dude is a choir boy but the sum of all evil? Really? How very Christian to assume that you could so easily separate the light from the dark anyway. You take the good with the bad. Dude screwed you over on a deal? Shouldn’t have been so quick to sell your soul. Call a lawyer first. A good one. If they don’t have him on speed dial they ain’t the one.
