The challenge: Share this photo in fifteen minutes or else She will visit you tonight and steal your soul. It was laughable. The picture in question was a blurry photograph of a young woman staring through a pane of glass, her face and hands pressed flat against it, but it had been touched up so that her eyes were black pits that seemed to stretch and run down her cheeks like wet eyeliner. The skin around her mouth looked jagged around the gaping hole. Honestly, the picture itself looked like it would steal his soul if he kept looking at it, so Daren clicked Like and kept scrolling.

I called him Patty, because he looked like he tasted like peppermints. At least, that was what I thought when I was a child. Now I surmise he or she would taste more akin to chicken, though if I ate Patty, I'm sure terrible things would happen, terrible things already have.

Ever since I was old enough to have a phone, I spent most of my time wreaking havoc on social media. Its lack of real-world obligations paired with the fact that my parents were completely oblivious to how it truly worked made it my personal playground. No holds barred. I could be whoever I wanted to be: a problematic “woke-ivist” on Twitter, a cutthroat Kali Uchis stan on Reddit, or my personal favorite, barely-legal jailbait on Instagram.

I sat there taking in the sounds and smells around me. Most of them were familiar to me while some were unpleasant and certainly unwelcomed. It was freezing out and the hoodie and beanie I choose for my morning escape were not doing the job. But despite the smells and the chill of the morning, I was in heaven. Do you hear that? Silence. Absolute silence.
