We're All Going to the World's Fair

One of my favorite YouTube rabbit holes is Alternate Reality Games, or ARGs. ARGs are a sort of interactive online mystery in which viewers and players track and record clues to a central mystery. These stories usually include elements of true crime, such as a murder or an urban legend, suspects and clues, and new uses of YouTube, Reddit, and other forms of social media to enhance the mystery. The stories are filled with information, and it's easy to lose track of time when reading them.

We're All Going to the World's Fair is a new horror film that adapts the concept of an ARG into a gripping horror narrative about a young girl who becomes engaged in an ARG only to learn that it is causing her real-life problems. Jane Schoenbrun's We're All Going to the World's Fair is a bleak, atmospheric horror picture featuring a fantastic lead performance by Anna Cobb.

We're All Going to the World's Fair

Casey (Cobb) looks to be an ordinary adolescent with a grudge. She has a tight relationship with her never-seen father, has been profoundly affected by her mother's death, and has turned to the internet for solace. Casey has been obsessed with an ARG that many believe has a supernatural hold on those who take part in its main challenge in the hopes of finding someone to connect with.

Strange things begin to happen soon after Casey records herself doing the "World's Fair Challenge" and posts it to her YouTube account. Casey begins to have waking nightmares and strange incidents while sleeping, which she captures for her YouTube channel, and she fears she is losing her grip on reality. Although Casey's videos do not receive a lot of attention, one admirer is concerned about her health.

We're All Going to the World's Fair

JLB (Michael J Rogers), a YouTube subscriber and fan of the World's Fair ARG, initiates a Skype conversation with Casey. At first, the two seem friendly and ready to discuss the mystery at the center of the World's Fair story. JLB, on the other hand, gets anxious about Casey's safety as their encounters become more heated. He wants to help, but he's a stranger who is also dealing with the aftermath of the challenge.

We're All Going to the World's Fair focuses almost entirely on Casey, while there are a few other notable cast members, including a slew of YouTubers from the fields of ARGs, internet mysteries, and general content creators. Writer-director Jane Schoenbrun's exquisite and terrifying plot is brought to life by YouTube sensations Theo Anthony, Evan Santiago, May "NyxFears" Leitz, and ASMR content creator Slight Sounds.

We're All Going to the World's Fair

Writer-director Schoenbrun and actress Anna Cobb will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. Cobb's first significant role, as well as Schoenbrun's debut feature, is a remarkable example of a filmmaker's vision and an actor capable of going to the emotional extremes required by the director without overacting. Cobb, who is only 18 years old and stars in her first feature film, controls the screen with the authority of a seasoned veteran. You can't take your eyes off her; she emanates misery and angst without trying.

Cobb's success stems in part from her perfect mastery of the story she's telling. Schoenbrun immerses herself in Casey's world, allowing her leading lady to investigate the online ARG's realm and the role she's chosen to play inside it. Shoenbrun's visual approach is unpleasant, including aspects such as a teenager's bedroom, a suburban home filled with dusty shadows, and a sad kid's haunting memory.

We're All Going to the World's Fair

We've gathered as a group. Going to the World's Fair is a disturbing story of mystery and intrigue set in the Alternate Reality Games community, a genre that relies on gloomy, atmospheric music, odd and terrifying images, and a tightly linked storyline that urges the audience to join in the mystery. The more you invest in the film, the more it draws you in in the most satisfying way possible. We're All Going to the World's Fair is both an ARG and a fully immersive horror film.

On Friday, April 15th, 2022, We're All Going to the World's Fair will have a limited theatrical release.
