We’re here to stop fighting and understand.

Based on true events, The Best of Enemies follows the unlikely alliance between a black civil rights activist, Ann Atwater, and white Ku Klux Klan Leader, C.P. Ellis. Set in Durham, North Carolina in 1971, the community debates about desegregating schools.

Stories like The Best of Enemies are how we discuss history. The film effectively demonstrates that we don’t always know what occurs in other people’s lives. Never let anybody silence your voice for your rights.

I am awestruck, not just by Taraji P. Henson and Sam Rockwell’s magnificent performances, but that they didn’t get nominated or win! Henson and Rockwell are both strong actors and it was a pleasure to see them share the screen.

In her portrayal of Ann Atwater, Henson was dictative in her voice and in her character’s change to listen to every voice. Henson has already proved that she is a worthy actress. Henson’s performance is powerful and ingrains her portrayal with a fierce determination and unyielding passion for justice. Even Atwater reluctantly realizes that her opinions are in the wrong, judging too soon.

Equally extraordinary, Sam Rockwell is an amazing actor who can pull off any role. He easily makes himself an unpleasant person. As the leader of the KKK, C.P. Ellis reluctantly develops his opinions about the human race. Rockwell epitomized depth in this hotheaded character. There is more to Ellis.

The film has several actors to credit. Babou Ceesey was excellent in his portrayal of Bill Riddick, the mediator of the town’s discussion. It’s not fair if you’re on one side of the debate in an argument. Riddick chose to understand both so he could help the community think differently.

This film defines how underrated an actress the late Anne Heche was. I have come to appreciate Heche and her abilities over time. Rockwell and Heche did an outstanding job in developing their relationship.

Robin Bissell assembled an insightful biography film about a necessary story in history. He remained true to the account. Bissell succeeds in developing an authentic atmosphere of the 1970s American South. He does not shy away from depicting the harsh realities of racism and segregation but also infuses moments of hope and humanity.

A sensitive subject matter about race is discussed in The Best of Enemies but that should not turn viewers away. Themes about race still resonate strongly in today’s world. History is not always pleasant but stories like these need to be told.

I remember talking about race in my English class in high school. Although it was uncomfortable at times, now that I look back at the discussions and opinions my classmates expressed, this is why these stories exist.

The Best of Enemies is an essential film for younger viewers who are learning topics about race and injustice. We can’t hide away from history. That’s a fact. This film engages viewers in conversations about growth and change. Like the characters, it reminds us to confront the darkest aspects of the past in a civil fashion.

The Best of Enemies explores themes about the personal transformation of its main characters. The film also serves as a poignant commentary on the power of empathy and overcoming societal divides.

Despite our differences, The Best of Enemies reminds us that we can work together to overcome boundaries and face issues together, instead of fighting. It’s heartwarming to know that Atwater and Ellis remained good friends for the rest of their lives.

You need to watch The Best of Enemies on Netflix. It’s an impactful true story that will resonate with several viewers.
