Viewers knew some details about Wendy Williams' life by picking up bits and pieces from her television show that has been on the air for 12 seasons. They learned a lot more by watching her biopic and documentary on Lifetime that premiered on Saturday, January 30, 2021.

Williams is the executive producer of the biopic and the documentary. That means everything that was included was approved by her. She did not hold back. She made a point of letting viewers know about the highs and lows she has experienced throughout the years. Ciera Payton is in the leading role as Wendy and Morocco Omari stars as Wendy’s ex-husband Kevin Hunter.

Wendy Williams' Biopic: The Movie

The biopic begins by showing how Wendy struggled with her weight as a child and teenager. Her parents scolded her because of her size which caused her to pee in the bed. They made her weigh herself every day. Her dad told her she would be pretty if she just lost some weight. She was criticized so much that she ended up with bulimia. She overcame it when she read in the tabloids that celebrities' teeth were rotting because of the purging they did.

Wendy's career started in urban radio. She had many radio gigs while gaining notoriety. She was fired from one radio job after two years. That didn't matter too much to Wendy because when things didn't go as planned in one city, she would get another radio job in another place including the Virgin Islands, Washington, DC, New York, and Philadelphia. At one time, she was working at radio stations in DC and New York at the same time. Wendy was raped by one of her first guests on her radio show early in her career. To this day, she has not revealed his name even though the producer told her she could name him.

When she got pregnant by a rapper, she had an abortion and never told the father or anyone. The outspoken talk show host was married twice. She refers to her first marriage as a "starter marriage" because it lasted only five months.

Wendy had a five-week miscarriage and a five-month miscarriage before marrying Kevin Hunter. She had one more after they were married. Therefore, before her son was born in 2000, she had experienced three miscarriages. During her last pregnancy, she did her radio show from her bed because her doctor advised her to stand up or walk only five minutes a day.

When Wendy met Hunter, she had a cocaine habit. He helped her become clean and he protected her when her haters literally came after her physically.

The outspoken talk show host never missed a day of work until 2018 when she was hospitalized with complications due to Graves' disease and hyperthyroidism. Her talk show was on hiatus for three weeks.

Later, her husband arranged for her to live in a sober house and rehabilitation facility. She was allowed to go to work each day, but she had to return to the sober house at night.

Wendy Williams' Documentary: What A Mess!

Wendy's two-hour documentary followed her two-hour biopic. Wendy did not star in the biopic. Her story was told through actors. In the documentary, she talked about many of the same things that were in her biopic. At times, she was emotional as she recounted her journey.

In both Lifetime stories, viewers learned that Kevin Hunter began cheating on Wendy two years into their marriage, but Wendy did not file for a divorce until they had been married for 21 years. It was after she learned her husband had moved his mistress, Sharina Hudson, into a house just nine miles from where he lived with her and their son in New Jersey. He fathered a baby girl with his mistress while he was still married to Wendy. Their divorce was finalized in January 2020. He had been Wendy's manager and producer of The Wendy Williams Show. However, Wendy fired him and banned him from coming into the building.
