Caravaggio (1986)
Introduction From: IMDB A great movie and an underrated biopic, this film is directed by the late and awesome Derek Jarman - a visionary whom I believe is one of the most talented directors of the 20th century. The first feature film role of Tilda Swinton and co-starring Sean Bean, Dexter Fletcher takes a leading role as the young and controversial artist who is played by different people over his lifetime. With the older Caravaggio being played by Nigel Terry, what more excuse could you have for watching this film? It is a masterpiece made as great as the artist's own. Derek Jarman does something very clever and makes the film look like various paintings by Caravaggio with stark references to Bacchus and The Entombment of Christ. This is more than likely one of the greatest films ever made - it is fantastic.

Fire and Ice
Frank Frazetta is widely regarded as the "Father of Fantasy Illustration," at least in the modern sense, and Ralph Bakshi is an all-around genius in his own right, having put out a succession of wildly divergent animated films, from the X-rated blue humor of Fritz the Cat (1972) to the rumble-in-the-jungle drama of American Pop (1981) and Heavy Traffic (1973). He also was the first to plumb the depths of the immortal Tolkien "Rings" saga, with his admittedly incomplete adaptation of the first third of the famous trilogy (the sequels, regrettably, were never made), The Lord of the Rings (1978). A confessed long-time lover of fantasy epics, Bakshi also made the cult favorite Wizards (1977), which had voices provided by Mark Hamill of Star Wars legendry, among others.

“The Power of the Dog” - My Thoughts 💭
“The Power of the Dog” - Dir. Jane Campion *This is a slightly expanded version of my prior film review from 2021. 🎞 Although it doesn’t at first appear to be much like a Campion film, I’d say that “The Power of the Dog” is a return to form for Jane Campion - after two uneven seasons of “Top Of the Lake” (2013 & 2017) and her last feature film “Bright Star” as far back as 2009. Overall, this film is more so Campion exploring different territory with this male-centric neo-western, instead of her back-catalogue of predominantly female-driven stories with highly feminist rhetoric - yet her reoccurring themes of power and desire are still ever present. The widely acclaimed “The Piano” (1993) is probably my favourite of hers, although I appreciate all her works.

The Creator
CAUTION: SPOILERS AHEAD. The Creator is what every good movie ought to be. Thought-provoking, grounded, visually stunning, and heartfelt. This is especially important when it comes to science fiction movies in the twentieth century, where the film industry has become hyper-focused on creating things that can be turned into franchises, AKA cash cows they can milk until the cow collapses.
