The 1980s had a peculiar talent for taking familiar movie formulas and covering them in neon. Take Rebel Without a Cause . Strip away some of the existential angst, add a Los Angeles street gang, throw in a romantic subplot, crank up the music, give everybody spectacular hair, and shoot it like MTV might interrupt at any moment.

I Have Some Bad News
I’ve been struck by the banality of the “Hero’s Journey” as shoved down our throats by Hollywood for the last fifty years. Oh great, another Dune movie about a white savior who was chosen to rescue an indigenous civilization. I loved that movie the last time I saw it, when it was called Avatar .

'Avenging Angel' (1985) - When Angel Fell Back Into the Streets
Angel Had More Trouble Coming There are few things Hollywood loves more than a surprise hit. Give a movie a small budget, an outrageous premise, a little controversy, and just enough audience interest to turn it into a box-office success, and suddenly everybody wants another one.
