I'm trying remember when I became officially aware of shared universes in TV, film, and other forms of media. I know I watched the Marvel Cinematic Universe kick off with Iron Man on May 2, 2008. Even before that, I was aware of some other universes. I had known already that Universal's top monsters (Frankenstein's Monster, Dracula, The Wolf Man) often pop up in various films. As early as the age of eight or nine, I knew about the Archie Comics universe; with the Archie characters, Josie and the Pussycats, and Sabrina often rolling together.

The Funniest Movie of the Year?
A full confession before I continue with this piece: I knew very little about the dynamic dumbos behind this film before I used my free movie pass to see “Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie” (that extra “n” still bothers me…and maybe that’s the point?) I went to Cinema du Parc over a month ago without knowing much about this one, except for the fact that it was a Canadian film (very Canadian), based on a popular web series (The Show), and had some sort of nostalgia for the early 2000s in Southern Ontario. I understood and waited in the new lounge to see this one with a few other fans, some of whom seemed to know more about it than I did, and it was odd to hear Matt Johnson (director and actor) and Jay McCarrol referred to in such sacred tones. The last time I had gone in to see a film knowing very little on what it was based on was “Veronica Mars”. I felt a little lost when fans around me started cheering for the faces on screen that meant nothing to me. There was no such reaction on my part when I watched this one. In fact, I felt like I was watching some old friends getting their work off the ground as they entertained us with a story based on nostalgia, time travel (a serious wink to “Back to the Future” here), and some “Jackass”-like behaviour involving the CN Tower and plenty of cable. And I thought that it was the funniest movie I saw in a long time, or would see this year. Take a bow, gentlemen.

SpongeBob Review
"Pranks a Lot" stands as one of the most iconic episodes of the classic SpongeBob era, perfectly capturing the mischievous dynamic between SpongeBob and Patrick in a way that remains hilarious to this day. The episode kicks off with a delightful trip to a specialized prank store, where the two spend their hard-earned money on the "Invisible Spray." The chemistry between the two best friends is at its peak here, as their excitement for harmless chaos sets the stage for a brilliantly orchestrated comedy of errors that keeps the pacing tight and the jokes landing consistently. Once they apply the magical spray, the duo becomes completely transparent, leading to a series of escalating pranks that terrorize the innocent citizens of Bikini Bottom. Watching SpongeBob and Patrick revel in their newfound spectral form is a joy, as they lean into the "ghost" aesthetic to maximize fear. The animation during these scenes is particularly clever, utilizing shadows and floating objects to sell the illusion that the town is being haunted by spirits who are actually just two bored neighbors looking for a laugh.
