My Review of "The Suicide Squad (2021)"

An unpredictable wild ride not to be confused with Suicide Squad (2016). It has a "The" in the title.

The Suicide Squad (2021) is a movie I actually didn't think would ever come out. When Suicide Squad (2016) came out I was pretty indifferent about the movie. That movie received a ton of backlash from fans and the studios. Nobody ever imagined that they'd attempt to do another one. Yet here we are with this newest iteration of the movie. I have a confession to make... it was actually pretty good.

This movie starts off with the introduction of some of the characters. We see the shots on commercials on TV and it looks wild and ridiculous. Luckily for us the promotion of this movie was kept very quiet and secretive. What happens next was quite a shock and out of left field. It came as such a shock that it kept me unexpected for the rest of the movie.

The movie falls under the same premise as the previous movie. There's a bunch of criminals that the American government are using in order to take on covert missions. Resulting in a lot of bad eggs in a team. A lot of the powers that they give these ragtag characters are pretty humorous. There's a guy that shoots polka dots, a guy that can detach his arms to attack people and other really hilarious powers.

With funny powers come a lot of funny jokes as well. This movie is littered with jokes all over the place that really work. We have the usual straight edge characters to counterbalance some of the wackiness. This way you have a pretty balanced tone throughout the movie. It's not like Marvel movies where they throw jokes at you a mile a minute as well.

The main mission of these super-heroes (or supervillains depends on how you see it), is to infiltrate a secret project on a remote island. It's fairly simple enough and there are admittedly a few convenient things that happen to help these characters carry out their tasks. Though I can see why they wrote it the way they did. Much of the movie consists of over the top action scenes. This is a summer popcorn movie at its finest.

A lot of the action will have you at the edge of your seat and squirming at the same time. This is an adult movie and quite violent. I wouldn't suggest bringing your kids to watch this movie even though I think a lot of them would really want to see it. However the extreme violence works with the comedy and tone of the movie. It really makes this movie a notch above the rest of the other DC movies that have come out in the past few years.

Then there's the character development of each of the characters. This in particular was done quite nicely. I think that they also had a sense of cohesiveness in this squad that they kind of didn't really have in the previous movie. It's funny because they talk about family a lot and that's really how the team sort of feels like by the end of the movie. They really feel like they have a good rapport with one another. I had more of an emotional attachment to these characters than the last movie.

Overall, you should check this movie out. It's probably the most fun action movie I've seen throughout the summer so far. Then again I haven't seen to many movies. Still this still ranks as one of the best DC movies that I've seen. I have to give this movie an 8.5 out of 10. The unpredictable nature had me excited throughout the movie because I didn't know what would happen to any of the characters. I love it when movies can pull this off.
