My Review of "The Tomorrow War"

A very flashy action movie that has its ups and downs.

Tomorrow War is one of the latest 2021 Amazon Prime exclusive titles. In some ways I'm pretty impressed with this movie. There are elements of this movie that scream big budget blockbuster movies. On the other hand some of those same big budget blockbuster elements are also its downfall. Regardless, I think it's a pretty good summer flick for those looking for some action.

This movie starts off in the middle of the movie then starts back up in the beginning. We see our main protagonist Dan falling down from the sky only to land in a swimming pool on top of a high rise building. He alongside hundreds or thousands of others just suddenly fell from the sky and we don't know why.

Cut to 30 years in the past we again see Dan but this time he's taking the garbage. They have a neighborhood party and he's just doing mild mannered everyday dad things. Everything seems good with his life but he's unsatisfied with his career.

As they're watching a soccer game there's this huge glitch and there's a spectacular scene where these people come out of some dimensional hole. The individuals from the hole mention that they're from the future. She then continues that the future requires the help from the citizens of that time to fight the invading horde of aliens. Already I'm thinking why would you pick this specific time to do it?

The logic of the movie doesn't matter though. It's a big blockbuster movie and this is when you have to shut your brain off and enjoy the movie. If you're able to this movie gets quite entertaining.

This is what I meant when I mentioned that the big blockbuster aspect of this movie is a little bit of its own downfall. There are a ton of situations that have huge plot holes in them and that's to be expected. There aren't a lot of movies that deal with time travel with rock solid logic. If you nitpick about this movie you're not going to have a lot of fun.

So obviously from the very beginning of the movie you can tell Dan is eventually going to get drafted to go to the future to fight the aliens. In between this time of when he gets drafted the movie explores his family dynamics. He has a very strained relationship with his father that doesn't seem to be reparable. Again it's a big budget movie you kind of know where everything is going to go. At least they give you pieces of the predictable story puzzle at a reasonable pace.

Then you have the action sequences. This is what you really should be coming to watch this movie for. The action sequences are really well done. It's not jam packed with fights but when it does oh boy you are going to have fun. They are quite playful with a lot of the banter and situations they come into. A lot of the fights can seem over the top but that's what makes a really great action movie.

The special effects for a straight to home movie are really well done. The animation of the CGI was top notch and the alien monsters looked gruesome. You can tell they put a lot of money into the visual effects of the movie because it definitely feels like a big blockbuster movie in the theaters.

Overall, if you're trying to decide whether to watch this movie or not you have to ask yourself what you're looking for in a movie. If you're looking for a fun action movie yes I would recommend this movie for you. On the other side you won't be looking at a complicated story or good character development in this movie either. I think your mind is already made if you saw the trailer to this movie anyways. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. I really liked the action in this movie and was able to shut off my brain during the story scenes.
