My Review of "Gen V: Season 1"

A cool side story based off the superhero TV show world of "The Boys".

Gen V: Season 1 has finally concluded on Amazon Prime. It's a off-shoot story in the same world as "The Boys". Don't worry you don't have to watch through "The Boys" to understand what's going on in this TV show. Although, it would help you a great deal if you did. If you're already a fan of "The Boys" tv series then you'll feel right at home with this one.

It all starts out with an introduction to the main characters of the show and the university they're all enrolled into. There's Marie who is the primary focus of the show. She gained her powers during puberty and due to the nature of her powers there were disastrous results. She inadvertently killed her parents and left her and her younger sisters as orphans. All alone and traumatized by the incident she has a chip on her shoulder to become a better person.

On Marie's journey she meets up with other superheroes in training at the university. They all have interesting backstories that have some sort of tragedy involved. Everyone's got some sort of character flaw that is glaring but it seems all fun and games.

Pretty soon things get pretty real because young people with powers are obviously going to abuse their powers. You'll see a ton of powers being abused in this show. Fortunately and unfortunately for the students there is a faculty that takes care of unruly students at the university. Nothing ever seems innocent in these types of shows.

Of course there's a huge underground conspiracy with this school. Marie and her newfound friends will have to figure out what it is and how to stop it. Again it's in the world of "The Boys" so there will be tons of morality issues with each question they ask themselves.

This show follows very much the same formula of the aforementioned show so if you've kept up with the show you'll feel right at home with this one. The look and feel of the show is almost identical but all within a school environment. Though fans of the show will get more out of this new series than newcomers.

Fans of the original show will understand that V in Gen V stands for the Compound V drug that they've injected their babies with. It's explained in this show but newcomers may get a little confused with some of the references that are used in this show as well.

Another similarity is the gratuitous violence that this show contains. There is a lot of brutal violence and nudity in here as well. This is not a show for kids. I can't imagine what the comics these shows are based on are like if this is what they're getting away with on TV.

Special effects are done pretty well and are probably on par with the main TV show it's based off of. There are a few cameos here and there that help you remember which world they belong to.

My only gripe about the show is that they always end these seasons with cliffhangers. I know the reason why they do this all the time but it's very tiresome to always end on cliffhangers. If your show is good enough people will continue to watch the next season despite having no cliffhanger to continue onto the next season. I hate that.

Overall, I had a heck of a time watching this one. It was so much fun and I love the main show so this was right up my alley. I loved the new characters and loved what this show will add to the main TV show as well. I have to give this first season an 8 out of 10. Too bad it ended on a cliffhanger because we know it's going to take them over a year to get to the next season. They take forever to get these things out!
