Top 3 Books You've Probably Never Heard of...
"Everything was symbolic to him. How he dressed, how he spoke, how he thought, who he associated with. Everything had to be prolific or why do it and his attitude was always tongue-in-cheek. Jean was always watching himself from outside of himself and laughing." - Widow Basquiat
Alicia ReneePublished 3 years ago in GeeksThe Genesis Of Ideas
I recently heard that Hollywood is running out of ideas. I'm sure you've heard something along those lines too. With the plethora of re-makes, re-imaginings, and sequels, you have to wonder if there's not some element of truth to it.
An actually autistic person reviews Sia's movie Music
The three films that I had previously refused to watch were Cannibal Holocaust, A Serbian Film, and Music. I still refuse to actually sit through the first two movies, but I recently forced myself to sit through what I consider to be more disturbing than I Spit On Your Grave. Unlike the 70s classic about survival and female empowerment, Sia's directorial debut does NOT have a reason to exist. I had been telling people for months to not waste their money on this film because I could tell by the trailer that it woefully misrepresents autism. Of course, that didn't stop trolls from tackling me on social media and saying things like "dOn'T jUdGe It If YoU hAvEn'T sEeN iT". Now that I have seen it, I can judge the absolute s**t out of it.
Catherine BurfordPublished 3 years ago in GeeksTonight, Match Your Mood With a Movie
Different moods require different cinematic measures. Every single movie awakens different feelings and emotions within us. There's a reason why when we're exhausted, we don't want to watch anything too complicated. We don't feel like watching anything sorrowful and despairing when our mood is already down. What we decide to watch at the end of the day can influence our frame of mind. It can also be significant in how we perceive the next day. I have created this list of films to watch based on your current mood to help you deal with what you're feeling in the moment, give you an alleviating distraction, or inspire you.
Marcel GrabowieckiPublished 3 years ago in GeeksSurmounted, Comprehended, Possessed
Salt Lake City is an easy town to know. You can see it all. Lying in a great bowl valley, it can be surmounted and comprehended and possessed wholly as few cities can. … The streets are marked by a system so logical that you can instantly tell not merely where you are but exactly how far you are from anywhere else … Looking into the blank walls of cities … breeds things in people that eventually have to be lanced (At Home in the Fields of The Lord).

I will be the first to admit. I am not a Judy Garland fan. I am not a hater more like lukewarm indifference, the only redeeming quality I saw in the Wizard of Oz were the ruby red slippers, which I am proud to say my oldest daughter had a replica of that she wore until they fell apart. Her “magic shoes” she called them.

Steven LeitmanPublished 3 years ago in GeeksA Filmmaker's Guide to: Death on Screen
In this chapter of ‘the filmmaker’s guide’ we’re actually going to be learning about literature and film together. I understand that many of you are sitting in university during difficult times and finding it increasingly hard to study and I understand that many of you who are not at university or not planning on it are possibly stuck of what to do, need a break or even need to catch up on learning film before you get to the next level. This guide will be brief but will also contain: new vocabulary, concepts and theories, films to watch and we will be exploring something taboo until now in the ‘filmmaker’s guide’ - academia (abyss opens). Each article will explore a different concept of film, philosophy, literature or bibliography/filmography etc. in order to give you something new to learn each time we see each other. You can use some of the words amongst family and friends to sound clever or you can get back to me (email in bio) and tell me how you’re doing. So, strap in and prepare for the filmmaker’s guide to film studies because it is going to be one wild ride.
Annie KapurPublished 3 years ago in GeeksRedemption (or lack thereof) in Heidi and Oliver Twist
Oliver Twist and Heidi are the two books I most recently finished reading. I enjoyed them both in different ways. And they both really had an overarching idea of redemption, though one had it in abundance and the other had an absence of it.
Sasha NicholsPublished 3 years ago in GeeksWhat Are the Publishers Missing?
Literary culture is where literature and culture meet in a dazzling display of socialising, friendships and artworks based upon our favourite novels, poetry and plays. For many years now, the aspect of 'literary' or rather of 'what is literary' has been up for debate. After genre fiction, literary fiction took over with the ability to transcend genre. But what exactly does that mean?
