Top Five 90s TV Shows for Girls/Women

If Netflix's new Winx Club didn't hit the spot for powerful women kicking butt, then here are some 90s shows that I recommend you revisit.

Looking for a show that is just full of girl power, humor, and action? Then these five shows are good fits for you.

1. Buffy the Vampire Slayer

"In every generation there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer." - Intro.

Well, not exactly alone. She and the Scooby Gang take on all the challenges of their deadly supernatural world from demons to finals. Buffy kicks butt, sacrificing her possessions, her dreams, and even her life for her friends and the world. She has moments of strength and weakness, confidence and insecurity. And if she wasn't enough, Willow, Joyce, Anya, Dawn, Tara, Faith, Kenzie, and many other female characters help her save the day. Willow being probably the STRONGEST character on the show. And that is just the good guys, there are some pretty bad arse female villains - including a fashion conscious, goddess named Glory. WARNING: Season 5 Episode 16, 'The Body', might leave you emotionally devastated.

2. Xena: Warrior Princess

"In a time of ancient gods, warlords and kings, a land in turmoil cried out for a hero. She was Xena, a mighty princess forged in the heat of battle. The power, the passion, the danger. Her courage will change the world." - Intro.

If you like the new show, Lost Girl, you will like this show. It is similar, but set in Ancient Greece (with a bit more comedy and a lot less sex). Xena is a war-hardened, queen of the battlefield. She is tough and she is quiet, but she is loyal and brave. Her best friend Gabrielle is perky and optimistic. Together, they save villages from warlords and the wrath of the Gods. Just like Buffy you have lots of strong female characters on both sides of the spectrum of good and evil. One thing I like about this too is the variety of strength the women have. Xena's mother has a maternal strength, she is strong in the face of warlords trying to take her home without violence. While Xena definitely has a more physical strength and Gabrielle has an emotional strength. WARNING: The sexual tension between the two main characters becomes too thick to cut with a knife.

3. X-Files

"People thought the storyline and characters for X-Files made it a 'dark show', but I never saw it that way. I always thought Mulder and Scully were the light in dark places."- Chris Carter.

There aren't many female characters, but those that are present, are fabulous. Scully is smart and confident, and she doesn't put up with anyone's BS. My favorite example of this is a scene where a local sheriff doubts her. He asks if her being a woman will compromise her ability to be professional and then says he doesn't really feel comfortable with her doing the autopsy, ending with a "not to be sexist but..." remark. She just flat out tells him that she is as affected as any one else would be and that she will send him her report when she is done. She doesn't let anyone push her around and she keeps Mulder from going off the deep end. Without her, Mulder would have either given up or ended up in a nut house. WARNING: Some of the episodes will leave you feeling pretty freaked out, might want to read descriptions ahead of time to see whether you should save the viewing for daylight hours.

4. Stargate-SG1

Jack O'Neill: "Where's he transferring from?"

Samantha Carter: "She is transferring from the Pentagon. I take it you're Colonel O'Neill. Captain Samantha Carter reporting, sir." - Pilot.

There are not many female characters in this show, but the ones that are in it are tough and clever. Samantha Carter is an astrophysicist, engineer, and pilot. In the first season, she physically fights and challenges the head of a tribe on a planet to a fight to win freedom and equality for the women in the village. She is a woman in a male-dominated field and on a male-dominated team, but she never lets that stop her from doing her best. Dr. Janet Fraiser, another awesome female character, is the head doctor. She is talented and compassionate. The best episode (that alone wins this show a slot on this list), is the episode where all the men on the base are brain washed by an enemy alien and the women have to save the base and the world. WARNING: The last two seasons are not as good as the first two.

5. Charmed

"Piper Halliwell: You got anything that would go with combat boots? You know, for the mommy-to-be who kicks some ass on occasion." S. 5, Ep. 10.

Three kick arse girls under one roof, all powerful and magical, but none of them alike. The oldest sister is strong and ambitious. The middle sister is reserved and clever. The youngest sister is carefree and excitable. But as strong as they all are, they still have their flaws. Prue too proud, Piper can be a pushover, and Phoebe can be a real flake. Yet they all do what they can to help others. I wanted to make note of their differences, not just because it makes it more interesting, but because there isn't one type of 'strong girl' or one ideal type of what a girl should be like and this show does a good job of demonstrating on how their differences make them stronger both on their own and together. They are all different. They are all flawed. But they all kick arse. WARNING: Don't get too attached to Prue.
