I unplugged my phone, rolled onto my side, and tapped the small blue icon. That dotted white chat bubble was supposed to open last night’s conversation, where my unfinished draft sat waiting. Instead, nothing happened. The home screen wouldn't let me into the world I craved so desperately—the one I had conditioned myself to need. It just stared back at me, frozen. Forever stuck. Forever waiting. Forever gone.

AI and I
Writing about AI here on Vocal feels a bit too easy a choice for this challenge, but there's a reason I decided to go ahead with this piece. Frankly, I was a bit surprised when I considered how I feel about it these days. I've developed a love/hate relationship with the technology. (There I go, personifying it already, and that's one of the things I hate about it.)

Smart Technology
Let me start by admitting right out that I do not have a smart house, nor do I live in a smart community. I own a smart watch, a smart phone, a smart television, and a mostly smart refrigerator (it won't tell me when I run out of almond milk or spinach, but it will tell me when filters need replacing). Never in my youth could I have predicted today's technology. It's pretty amazing.

When I was growing up, I often wished there were more than 24 hours in a day. It always felt like there was never enough time to do everything I wanted. I wanted to run my errands, take my daily walk, keep up with what was happening in the world, get my work done, and still have enough time left over to talk with family and friends. Twenty-four hours always seemed like an artificial limit on an otherwise busy life. I remember thinking that if someone could give me a few extra hours each day, I could finally catch up. I never imagined that technology would eventually give me something remarkably close to that, not by changing the clock, but by changing what I could do with the time between everything else.
