What Is Masturbation?

And is it Shameful?

Masturbation is the act of self-stimulating the genitals for pleasure. In most cases, it usually is continued to the point of orgasm or until the person feels satisfied. It's a natural way to help someone relax, reduce overall feelings of stress, and explore their sexuality.

At one time, masturbation was thought to be a sign of mental health problems, but that has long since been debunked. Lots of people masturbate. It's a fairly common and perfectly normal activity that has nothing to do with illness. Anyone can do it if they want to. It can be done with toys designed for the purpose or simply with the hands.

Is Masturbating Shameful?

There are a lot of people who may feel that masturbation is taboo. They were raised to see it as evil or wrong. These views can lead to a lot of shame. The pleasure a person feels from masturbating can end up causing a lot of conflicting emotions if someone also feels it's something to be ashamed of.

It's important to know that there is nothing shameful about masturbating. Your body is a natural and beautiful thing. There isn't anything shameful about the human body. You shouldn't be afraid to explore your own body. You should be able to look at, touch, and understand the different feelings your body can give you.

If you continue to experience high amounts of embarrassment or discomfort with masturbation, try to talk to someone about it. Pick your partner or someone you trust to explore why it makes you uncomfortable. You may also wish to consider seeing a therapist to explore any feelings of guilt.

How Often Can I Masturbate?

People tend to wonder how often it's okay to play down under, but there is no set number. Each person has a sex drive that is unique to them. How often someone can masturbate is very personal. It's also likely to change throughout the course of their life. A person should enjoy that personal time as much or as little as they feel comfortable. For some people, this may be multiple times a day while others may only feel the desire a few times a year. It's not a race or competition. Each person should listen to the rhythms and needs of their own body, and let that dictate how often they indulge.

The only times that masturbation frequency can be a cause for concern is if a person is beginning to experience pain, soreness, or discomfort during the sexual activity or if the need to masturbate is compulsive and interfering with a person's life. All of these things can be a symptom of another problem or an underlying health issue. It's a good idea to check in with your doctor in these cases. Otherwise, it doesn't matter how often someone masturbates.

Where Should Masturbation Happen?

Masturbation is usually an individual activity. It should be done in privacy. Make sure you are in a space that gives you that, and where you are unlikely to be unexpectedly interrupted. Your bedroom or a bathroom where you can lock the door is best. Playing with yourself in the shower can ensure privacy, and also make cleanup fast and easy. If you are choosing the space in your bedroom or another private room, it's a good idea to have a clean towel nearby to clean up after.

Having a private space is important. Not only do you want privacy so you can really relax and enjoy yourself, but it's equally important to respect the consent of others. Masturbation should never be done in a public place or in the presence of others, unless it's in a space where everyone has agreed to the activity. This could be a sex club, swingers party, or a private residence where people have gathered and consented to activities that include masturbation.

Masturbation can also be fun when done with a consenting partner. Some couples engage in mutual masturbation as a safer sex method. It allows a couple to be intimate and engage in sexual activity with a significantly reduced risk of STIs or pregnancy. Mutual masturbation can also add some spice to the bedroom routine. In a newer relationship, it can also be an effective way to demonstrate to your partner how you like to get off.

Take Control of Your Sexuality
