There is a saying that what and how you eat, speaks volume about your personality. I may like to eat spicy food but you may not. Your friend may like to save the best for the last, while you will just mix everything on the plate and gobble them down without a thought.

In the same manner, where and how you sit in a cafe, speaks volume about your personality. Each spot conveys meaning and reveals the situation we are going through.

You sit outside of a cafe

It’s lunch hour. I just got out of the office. It was cold and freezing as somebody had turned down the temperature. The four walls of the office were also no comfort; hence I needed someplace open and spacious.

I went to my regular cafe. Sitting outside of the cafe seems a good choice. There are the sun, the breeze, and the crowd — a naturally refreshing environment. I get to be a part of the busy, lunch crowd but from a near distance.

I'm enjoying my meal and watching life pass by. Groups of school students talk and laugh loudly. A businessman walks hastily and talks abruptly on his mobile. An elderly couple walks hand-in-hand down the sidewalk. A lady is seen taking her pet dog for a walk.

You sit on the terrace of a cafe

If sitting outside was for lunch; sitting on the balcony is for dinner. It’s evening and I just got off work. I head to this famous cafe down the road. It boasts amazing views from its terrace. You could see the skylines from above.

I’ve had a rough day at work. I was seeking some solace at someplace. I need an alternative and refreshing view of the troubles of life.

As I look out the balcony, the breeze blows away the negativity. It is gone with the wind. Enjoy and be amazed at the view.

You sit facing the entrance

Maybe the cafe was somewhat empty as the crowd had yet to settle in. I sat facing the entrance. People who sit facing the entrance have great expectations of what is to come.

They are expecting something of the unknown, something magical, or something dramatic to take place. Somehow, somewhat, or someone is expected to make a dramatic entry. Perhaps a knight in shining armor bursting through the doors and blowing a trumpet, or just your date bursting through the doors (because he or she was late).

You sit with your back facing the entrance of a cafe

Instead of facing the entrance, I sat with my back facing the entrance. I wanted to look away from all the distractions that were coming in; instead, focus on what's going out. What intrigued me was how the orders were being sent to the kitchen, and how the orders were being sent out. You could see the facial expressions of the chef and the waiter arguing about a dish.

On the other hand, you've had an eyesore from work. You’ve seen too much, heard too much, and said too much. You want to un-see you’ve seen all day. It’s refreshing to see something that is not the norm. Therefore, sitting with your back facing the entrance is a refresher.

You sit at the corner of a cafe

I was looking for someplace quiet and isolated from the crowd in a cafe. The table at the corner seemed like the ideal spot. It is usually where the quiet, lonely, and focused people sit. They prefer to be left alone and undisturbed.

You also don’t want to draw too much attention to yourself. You can quietly sneak in and out of the cafe without being noticed. Stay close to the walls when leaving the cafe.

You sit in the middle of a cafe

While waiting for your seat, you scan the cafe for a suitable spot. A beam shines down towards the middle of the cafe. A table and chair stand out brightly in the center. Sit in the middle and be the center of it all.

People who sit in the middle are presumably attention seekers. All eyes would immediately turn to them. People seated on their right would notice you on their left. People seated on their left would notice you on their right. People seated in front of you would turn around to see who was behind them. People walking into the cafe would immediately notice you sitting in the middle of the cafe.

As I was seated in the middle, I had a 360-degree view of all that was going on around me. I saw how and where people sat in the cafe.

My question to you: where do you sit in a cafe?
