What Football Game?

This Recipe Goes Out To All The Commercial Lovers

The Super Bowl came and went and you might be someone who has no idea what happened. Hopefully by now you've gained a trick: if you say Tom Brady won, you have a good chance of being right even if you didn't watch the game. You also might be someone who mixes up sports terms; is it the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, or World Cup? Honestly, you're probably safe if you just say some type of dish. Super Plate?

I'll admit it, I don't always know what is going on with the Super Bowl, but I will use any reason to celebrate with family and friends. Life is too short not to celebrate. I love the idea of an entire nation watching and experiencing something live together (like the good old days when TV shows actually aired live on TV). After this year of distancing, our nation needed the feelings of unity that the Super Bowl helps to give.

I get emotional when I think about the players and how the Super Bowl is the biggest day of their football career. They have trained and prepared for their entire lives to hopefully experience this day. We all love a good underdog or cinderella story, and oftentimes, the Super Bowl gives us the American Dream satisfaction. But do I really care about the players crashing into each other and carrying a ball over a line? Nah, I'm more of a soccer girl anyway. The commercials though, that is where the entertainment lies. Those quick advertisements have to be good for the amount of money put into them.

CBS reportedly charged $5.5 million for a 30-second spot.

["Best Super Bowl Commercials 2021"]

$5.5 million for a 30-second commercial is parallel to a Hollywood movie spending $1.3 billion for a typical hour and a half rom-com (and that's only to get it on TV, not taking into account the money it takes to actually make the film). Each commercial is like a short film. For example, The "No Way Normal" commercial by General Motors stars some of our favorite actors: Will Ferrell, Kenan Thompson, and Awkwafina. In one minute, it gave me all the feels of a classic Will Ferrell comedy. That being said, whether I'm in the movie theatre watching a high-budget blockbuster or watching the Super Bowl commercials, there's only one snack I want.

What's the easiest, go-to snack for watching something entertaining? You guessed it: popcorn. I'm going to let you in on a recipe that is the champion of popcorn recipes because of its secret ingredient (and its healthy)! This popcorn gets requested when I go to parties (it has maybe even gotten me invited to a party or two). This popcorn will make you the MVP of Super Bowl snacks and help distract from the fact that you have no idea what's happening in the game! It will get the party started and is super easy to make!

Chicken wings are amazing, chocolate chip cookies are undeniably delicious, and nachos are game day classics, but when all the flashy snacks have been consumed and the people are full, it’s the time the game (and commercials) become most intense. This is when people need something to munch on because of nerves. And this is when my popcorn takes center stage...or center field.

What you need:

🍿Hot Air Popper (if you don’t have an air popper, see below for the Stove Top version)

🍿Popcorn Kernels

🍿Spray Coconut Oil or Spray Olive Oil

🍿Sea Salt

🍿THE SECRET INGREDIENT --Nutritional Yeast

(Nutritional Yeast tastes like a cheesy, naughty seasoning but happens to be vegan and actually healthy! When I bring it to parties, no one has any idea it's healthy, they can just taste the goodness).

Fill the hot air popper up with kernels to the line. Turn on. Once it starts popping, spray it with oil, add sea salt and nutritional yeast. Make sure to spray enough oil so the seasonings stick!

STOVE TOP VERSION:

Completely cover the bottom of the pot with olive oil or coconut oil (I don’t use spray oil for this version).

Completely cover the bottom of the pot with kernels.

Turn the stove on high and put the lid on the pot.

Continue to shake and move the pot every few seconds as the kernels are popping so that no kernels stick or burn on the bottom.

Once the popping has slowed to almost a stop then the stove off and move the pot off the burner.

Take off the lid and add salt and nutritional yeast, and enjoy!

Voila, that's it! Simple to make and perfect to eat while watching those commercials, the true meaning of the Super Bowl!
