When I first considered writing this guide, San Antonio was not a pizza town.

Billed as the "Gateway to the Alamo," San Antonio is a foodie haven. Still, pizza lovers everywhere might question if central Texas is a real player.

There have been new places popping up all over town, but there are some here that stand out from the pack and should keep you excited for future pizza adventures.

Some are so good, they could (almost) convince a cynical New Yorker to move to San Antonio.

This is why it was time for us to give you an updated ranking of the Alamo City's best pizza.

Here are our top 7 best pizza tips for your family but please keep in mind that we aren't talking about the atmosphere, decor, and service of these pizzerias. This article's takeaway is simple: you need to eat here before it becomes a chain with too many locations. Now go enjoy some delicious pizza!

1. Grimaldi's

For the best pizza in San Antonio, search no further than Grimaldi's! With an authentic brick oven and a selection of every cheese blend imaginable, this restaurant will have you drooling for seconds.

Grimaldi's also offers a unique, curated wines list to pair with their pizzas, so make sure to order some of their Mille Gradi (or just a glass) and maybe even try the Punga Margherita for something more colorful.

Bottom line? You can't go wrong with adding Grimaldi's to your list of must-visit pizza joints in San Antonio!

2. Dough Pizzeria Napoletana

A pizza restaurant with a lively atmosphere is the perfect place to indulge in some pizzas, especially if you enjoy the Neapolitan style.

Authentic and delicious, that is precisely what you're going to feel when you order from Dough. Not only can you indulge in Neapolitan pizzas like the Margherita or pepperoni but pizza salads as well as burrata while choosing from a selection of Italian wines if you prefer.

Bottom line? Featured on Guy Fieri's program Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, you know this place is gonna be good.

3. Big Lou's Pizza

The food at Big Lou's Pizza is giant, but not for the reason you might think.

The pizza here is seriously one of the most enormous, most oversized pizzas you've ever laid eyes on. Having been here myself, and knowing first hand that one slice is as big as yo' face, Big Lou's doesn't disappoint.

The buzz for this place comes is universally for its massive, 42-inch pizza that can feed a huge family all on its own. But what's really notable here is that these pizzas are also pretty darn good. The lines here get long, but the pizza makes it well worth the time.

Bottom line? You. Can't. Miss. Big Lou's!

4. Fralo's®

At this restaurant, you will find a pleasant atmosphere with live music. If the weather permits, enjoy your pizza outside by the oak trees while listening to that great tunes.

Family-owned for over 15 years, Fralo's offers more than just mouth-watering hand-tossed pizzas. They have a full selection of beers and wines too.

They've been named one of San Antonio's Best New Restaurants, Peoples Choice Awards, and continue to amaze us with incredible pies.

Bottom line? The super cool ambiance, live music, and perfect Texas weather make Fralo's one of the most remarkable pizza experiences that you cannot miss!

5. Florio's

New York Style pizza and subs, an authentic recipe handed down to family from Pizzeria originally on 13th street and first avenue in New York, from the New Jersey native Florio family.

It's almost like you're in NYC here. Whether you pop in for a slice or a whole pie, the only thing missing is that "oh so special" New York attitude. San Antonio does that, though. Kind of tames you down but thank goodness the pizza and flavors are as potent as ever.

Bottom line? It's a little bit of New York pie right in the Alamo City.

6. Trilogy Pizza

The name, Trilogy refers to the three types of pizzas from which customers can choose: thin New York–style, deep dish Chicago–style or a thin, wheat California crust, giving diners a pretty wide variety. All pizzas are available in any type, so no matter your preference, they have you covered.

The Farmers Market pizza is one of the menu's specialty pies, one of my top picks. While not exactly light, it provides a fresh take when you're just not feeling the pepperoni. Made with garlic-infused olive oil, mozzarella, feta, chicken, spinach, tomatoes, zucchini, and artichokes, it is truly elevated by the unique, fresh sauce.

Bottom line? My personal fav San Antonio pizza joint, if I'm being frank.

7. Stella Public House

Stella Public Houses' "farm to pizza" concept is centered on farm-to-table food practices and the development of solid partnerships with local growers, ranchers, and purveyors.

Located in the hip new Southtown area and with pretty artisan-leaning pizza, you'll find the coolest folks in town here.

Stella prides itself on its dishes made with local ingredients, but it understands if traditionalists or those with specific diets want something more familiar.

Bottom line? Rotating beer list, pretty cool spot, and killer pizza? A winning trifecta.

Enjoy some pizza time while on a vacation in San Antonio or even if you're a local

It is undeniable that pizza will always make me happy; whenever there is a pizza on the table, everyone seems to be cheerful and in a good mood. I know I am.

To add some non-Tex-Mex variety while on vacation in San Antonio, partaking in pizzas is definitely an excellent idea!
